It is part of the "Sacred Space" project at the historical Clifton Heritage site, a site documenting the former slave plantation, now a ruin, a subject of great community protest, contestation, and, appropriately so, passion. How to make such a nightmare of the past a document to history, to lives destroyed and exploited and lost, and not some tacky tourist reenactment that reduces human lives and history to cliche? That was the commission . . . and then, several hundred feet from the site, on what was once a garbage dump, between oil tankers off shore and giant oil storage units on shore, Antonius Roberts worked with a metal work and a community of artists and other Bahamians to restore the land, to turn a garbage dump into a sacred space, a place of genesis, new beginning, a place of beauty and history and contemplation, a restoration, fronting the sea. |
| Posted: 06 Aug 2010 05:11 AM PDT It is not really conceivable why anyone for what occasion on any planet would script an "out of office" message to go toevery email in one's "sent mail" at least since 2008 (that was the most extreme case I heard from) but, well, if you sent me an email since 2008, you probably were informed this past week that "CATHY DAVIDSON IS ON VACATION.". . . One friend and colleague at Duke to whom the same assault had happened on her vacation last February immediately recognized the problem and both sent a shuddering note of empathy and some saving wit, describing what was happening in my inbox as an "opera of vacation messages twittering back and forth to one another like so many summer techno-locusts." |
