Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest Cheats

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:33 PM PDT

Yeah, yeah, we know. Aragon doesn’t cheat. He’s heir to the vacant throne of Gondor! Fair enough, but he does lie, or at least lie by omission about his heritage. That’s good enough for us. This cheats page, therefore,  is intended as a headquarters for all things Aragorn, a companion piece to Warner Brothers’ 3rd-person action title. Whether you’re looking for a hard-to-unlock trophy, or merely stuck on a particularly tricky sequence, we’re here to help. Don’t waste any time in frustration — spend it defeating the forces of evil and marrying immortal elven hotties.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Achievements

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:13 PM PDT

The latest of your childhood memories to receive the reboot treatment, the venerable Castlevania franchise is back, this time as a lushly-designed, 3rd person blockbuster. Developed in part by Kojima Productions (the studio of visionary Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima), the new title does away with previous Castlevania canon, seeking to give new players and entry-point into the series.

Though it preserves the European setting and Gothic ambience, gameplay has been completely redesigned, mostly due to the switch to 3D environments. Players will engage in combat, platforming, and puzzling in order to conquer the game’s 50 levels. With voice talent provided by Robert Carlyle, Nathascha McElhone, and Sir Patrick Stewart, it’s clear that no expense has been spared. Posted: 10 Sep 2010 07:55 PM PDT

The world of Middle Earth is no stranger to shiny stuff, but these trophies weren’t part of the lode the Dwarves brought up when they delved too deep in Moria. Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest Walkthrough

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 06:55 PM PDT

Billed as the game that will put you in right inside the chain mail of Middle Earth’s biggest hero, Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest promises 3rd-person hack-and-slash combat with an additional dose of horseback riding and archery. Gamers will take control of Isildur’s heir as he battles his way through the set-piece engagements of J.R.R. Tolkein’s epic trilogy, putting paid to many an orc along the way.

The developers have cooked up an interesting narrative conceit, presenting the martial material with the help of Samwise Gamgee — the game’s levels take the form of stories, told by Sam to a group of young hobbits. This walkthrough is intended to ease your progress through Sam’s fables. Check back on release day for detailed information about how to defeat Aragorn’s many enemies!

Wal-Mart Taking MAG 2 Preorders

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 01:36 PM PDT

Oh damn, Wal-Mart. Nobody knows anything about MAG 2 being a thing that exists, and Zipper is working on SOCOM right now, and MAG just came out in January, and… oh dear. It says it comes out January 25, which is one day short of one year after the release of MAG.

They can’t just be making this up, right? Somebody must have said something to somebody for them to list this, right? My guess is that it can only be attributable to human error, but I’ve been wrong before.

Sheesh.

PAX 2010: Dungeons and Dragons Online Video Interview

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 12:51 PM PDT

Lord of the Rings Online wasn’t the only Turbine game we saw at PAX last week. We also got the chance to interview Fernando Paiz, Executive Producer, and Ian Currie, Design Director with Dungeons and Dragons Online.

DDO is celebrating its one-year anniversary of going free-to-play, and so Turbine has a lot of statistics, deals, and more to share with you. Check out the video below to see all the goodies ofr yourself, or head over and download it yourself from our fast, free servers.

14 Hottest Gamer Girls (LIST)

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 12:43 PM PDT

If women playing games, especially pretty women, weren’t still such a rarity, it’d be a less interesting Google search. And even though, as a medium, video gaming is a lot more equal than it’s been in the past, it’s still a tall order to fire up Xbox Live and come across a player of the female gender. Plus for some reason, all women on Xbox Live have the exact same voice and sound like 12-year-old boys. I’m not sure what that’s about.

Anyway, girl gamers do exist, and there are plenty to drool over. For your convenience, we’ve stripped (get it?) the “wandering blindly through the plains of the Internet” portion of the process of finding them, and gone straight to the “staring at pictures” part.

14.

The Frag Dolls

A rotating group of Ubisoft-sponsored female pro-gamers. Let me reiterate: Rotating. Female. Pro. Gamers. The Frag Dolls show up on Xbox Live every Friday for your multiplayer enjoyment, and from the sounds of things, they splatter many of us amateur miscreants all over cyberspace. These aren’t just women who happen to know their way around a controller; these are women who know their way around rocket launchers. Tanks. Car theft. Gunslinger duels. Bare-knuckle boxing. Sounds like a great date – even if you’re losing.

13.

Morgan Webb

TV host, columnist – Morgan Webb plays a lot of video games and could probably kick your ass at many of them. She co-hosts X-Play on G4, which hit 1,000 episodes this year, and reviews enough games to put on episodes three times a week. She also hosts G4 Underground.

12.

Michele Boyd

If being an actress (she plays Riley on The Guild) and snowboarder weren’t enough, Michele is crazy smart. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior from the University of California – Davis, which means she knows more about your brain than you do. Michele games, watches stuff like Battlestar Galactica, and probably understands the science behind Warp drive and those worms that crawl in your ear in Wrath of Kahn. Is it getting hot in here?

11.

Zooey Daschanel

Indie queen Zooey’s position on nerd love lists has never been exactly low. She even took the starring role in the formerly SciFi Channel’s miniseries “Tinman,” an update of the Wizard of Oz that was…well, somewhat dreadful. Turns out, though, in addition to leading her own band, taking on cool indie film roles, and generally being a super-cool girl next door, Zooey is a huge fan of – wait for it – The Legend of Zelda. And not just any Zelda: the SNES sequel A Link to the Past, arguably THE BEST Zelda. I don’t know about you, but for me, potential 16-bit makeout music would raise any woman’s stock.

10.

Milynn Sarley

Spreading her love of games and nerd culture throughout the Internet via her YouTube channel is what landed Milynn (pronounced My Lynn, not “your Lynn”) her a gig  hosting for EA TV. Clearly you know what you’re talking about when the gaming industry calls you for a job. Also, if you needed more evidence of her awesomeness, Milynn is working on her black belt in Shotokan – so she can hand you your ass both digitally and in real life.

9.

Jessica Chobot

Not only does Jessica share your affinity for video games, she writes for and does hosting at IGN.com – so she’s knowledgeable. She’s like having a hot player’s guide, or a hot new release calendar. Here’s a woman who not only will play games with you and talk games with you – she can teach you a few things as well. And maybe not just about games. (She writes a blog for Maxim. Totally what I meant.)

8.

Mila Kunis

What’s cooler than starring in the lackluster Mark Wahlberg adaptation of Max Payne? Well, lots of things – but having some digital street cred at least is cool. Mila earns hers setting people on fire in World of Warcraft. In addition to hilarious turns on That 70′s Show and Family Guy, she spends her time vanquishing monsters as a mage in the MMO. Cue about 900 thinly veiled innuendos about magic missiles.

7.

Felicia Day

A woman so deeply entrenched in the MMO culture, she was able to write, direct, produce and star in a hugely successful web show about it called The Guild. And she’s a redhead. And she’s hilarious. And she’ll dress up with you when you go to Comic Con. Or for other special occasions, like every Wednesday night.

6.

Clare Grant

Having Seth Green for a husband gives Clare a ton of nerd cred at the outset – she’s married to Scott Evil, people – so when she says video games are her hobby, it’s probably fair to say she can rock an energy sword as well as a zergling rush. She’s an actress who has appeared in Black Snake Moan and Walk the Line, but Clare’s coolest role must be producing and starring in Saber, an award-winning Star Wars fan film along with…

5.

Rileah Vanderbilt

…who also wields a lightsaber with more skill than both Kenobi and Vader in A New Hope. Rileah also is an actress who has appeared in movies such as Hatchet and Hatchet 2 and Frozen, which was a Sundance 2010 selection, and she’s into comics, video games and Star Wars (obviously). Really, that video linked in Clare’s profile should be plenty, but if not, know that Rileah is also one-fourth of the mysterious Team Unicorn, along with Clare, Michele and Milynn.

4.

Jenny McCarthy

She shows up in Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 and Your Shape on Wii – and she’s been playing games since Pac-Man. And apparently in addition to acting in Command and Conquer, Jenny’s an avid player. So she’s funny, sexy and an adept military strategist. Sounds ideal for the inevitable zombie apocalypse – and you’d have someone to play games with, too.

3.

Megan Fox

Imagine a digital femme fatale who could rip off her face and set you aflame with her fire breath as “Finish Him!” echoes in your ears – that’s Megan, a devout Mortal Kombat fan. Before she was appearing in perpetual sunset as robots wail on each other care of Michael Bay, she was playing games – her first system was the Super Nintendo.

2.

Grace Park

She’s the sexy science fiction icon best known for her turn as the killer Cylon robot model Number Eight, who was also a fighter pilot, in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica update. Even better(!) – she’s an old-school gamer. Grace is into Donkey Kong and the all-time most-likely-to-lead-to-things date game, Super Mario Kart. It doesn’t get much hotter than that.

1.

Your Girlfriend, Idiot

Especially if she’s in the room right now, looking over your shoulder, your girlfriend is the hottest woman gamer there is. And that’s what you should tell her. Specifically if she plays with you, and can stand you. Seriously – she’s real, and that’s a pretty big boon. Don’t have a girlfriend? You should get on that. Hop on Xbox Live on Friday nights and try to impress a Frag Doll. (Note: You may have to practice your abilities, and charms, beforehand.)

PAX 2010: Hands-On with FEAR 3

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 09:19 AM PDT

What’s up with FEAR these days? Well, it’s now in the hands of Day 1 Studios, who are the folks who handled the console ports of of the original FEAR and more recently developed Fracture. And they have, immediately, put their own stamp on this third entry in our favorite first-person-shooter horror franchise.

This game is co-op. Yes, the lead is the same nameless clone soldier from the first game, but now a second player can tag along in the role of, you didn’t guess it, Paxton f**king Fettel. That’s right. Here’s the dynamic: Point Man uses guns and slowmo, like always. Fettle, on the other hand, does not use guns. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-? Yeah. Instead of guns, Fettel has red glowing hands.

Umm, so what’s the point of that? Well, Fettel has a few tools. He can punch people. He can throw red energy balls at people. When Point Man puts everybody in slowmo, he can do this pretty rad shockwave thing. Oh, and he can pick people up with a red tentacle that comes out of his left wrist. And once he’s done that, he can possess them.

Possession means you become the person. (Where does Fettel go during this? No idea.) When I got my hands on Fettel, one of the first things I did was take over a sniper and start murdering the hell out of a bunch of enemy soldiers. It was pretty great.

Shifting gears a bit now. One new story point I got to experience is that Point Man and Fettel will be wandering through a neighborhood affect by Alma’s psychic blast. These people are crazy, and they pretty much operate like Left 4 Dead’s zombies, though some of them will have guns. This was pretty dark and spooky, so yay!

Also, throughout the demo Fettel and Point Man experienced… visions of some sort. I was told that these will happen regularly through the rest of the game, and they’ll culminate at the climax of the game. Color me intrigued.

Anywho, we still have no release date for this thing, but it’ll be out early next year in all likelihood. For now, though, it looks pretty cool, so keep it on your radar.

Gandalf Announces Lord of the Rings Online Free-to-Play Launch in New Trailer

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:55 AM PDT

OK, I’ve been impressed with several TV commercials for games over the past few weeks. The Halo: Reach commercials are awesome, the Madden 11 ones aren’t bad, but my new favorite has to be the new Lord of the Rings Online ad.

Designed to officially launch LotRO’s free-to-play conversion, the ad features Gandalf exiting the Turbine offices and making the announcement in what I think we can all agree is appropriate Gandalf fashion.

I won’t ruin it for you, but I will say that the only way this could be more awesome would be if Ian McKellen himself was playing the part of Gandalf. Enjoy the video below below, or download it from our fast, free servers.

Treyarch: Good Multiplayer is its Own Online Pass

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 08:23 AM PDT

EA’s Online Pass and other similar offerings are the industry’s latest attempt to combat sales of pre-owned games. But according to Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch, you don’t need an online pass to discourage users from trading in their games.

In an interview with MCV, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia said that the multiplayer in their upcoming shooter will discourage gamers from trading in their games.

Multiplayer is critical to the success of this series. It has such tremendous staying power – there are millions of people playing Call of Duty every day. It's entertaining people on a magnitude that's mind-blowing and we work really hard to make sure it's supported for a long time.

The effort that goes into the multiplayer is a living thing – we have a team that continues to work on it for World At War. We've done that for a long time and expect to do so for this game.

He also confirmed that Black Ops will not use any sort of Online Pass, saying,

You won't see that for Black Ops. The multiplayer comes with the game you buy – you don't have to do anything else for that.

While I don’t see publishers who have adopted the Online Pass model taking this to heart, it is nice to see a developer who believes the best way to keep people from trading their games in is to make the games better and more valuable.

With multiplayer such an integral part of the gaming world these days, perhaps developers who are considering an Online Pass model will instead choose this route. Not only would they endear themselves to gamers up front, but they’ll expand that audience with used sales.
