APB Might Be Resurrected

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 06:04 PM PDT

If APB isn’t dead yet, it will be soon, as we learned yesterday. But wait just a minute. For whatever reason, the BBC reported on this story, and they say Realtime Worlds is still trying to sell APB. We knew they had been trying to sell it for a while now, but nobody has bitten, which is why the MMOFPS is shutting down.

The news, of course, isn’t that Realtime World is still trying to sell the game. No, the news is that somebody who had been working on APB told the BBC that Epic Games is a “potential buyer.”

Oooooooohhhhhhhh. So they asked Epic about that, and Epic PR buddy Dana Cowley would only say that Epic VP Marc Rein loves the game and that, “If any talks like that are going on, then they would be confidential.”

Now is when you stroke your chin in wonder and make a noise that sounds like “hhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmm.”

15 God-Awful Video Game Commercials (LIST)

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 05:21 PM PDT

Sure, many of us know how fun video games are today. But for some people, virtual entertainment is frightening and confusing. How does it work? How susceptible is my brain to being liquefied from constant play? Will pixelated blood trigger my own, instinctual, unquenchable blood-lust?

Game companies have had to battle this stigma by establishing that video games are fun. And not just regular life fun. Like exploding from the TV, destroying your living room, melting your face fun. And that means actors have had to portray just how mind-blowing the experience of controlling a picture of something projected on a screen using a variety of button combinations could be.

Behold 15 of the most terrible, non-funny, awkward and insulting game commercials ever to grace your television.

15. Michael Jackson: The Experience. Most fun ever. EVER.

Michael Jackson: The Experience Trailer – Watch more Game Trailers

Look, I know the job of a commercial is to make a game look fun. And it’s hard to resist classic Michael Jackson tracks. Makes sense.

But these actors are really earning their paychecks. They’re beyond having fun – they’re having an orgasmic good time with that Wii remote. Ignore the fact that the game’s hardware is incapable of picking up any dancing that doesn’t directly involve the remote itself – you will be so good people will mistake you for Michael Jackson. Clearly you should kill yourself if you can’t afford a Wii, as you will never experience joy like this any other way.

14. Wii Sports totally brings families together

This commercial isn’t bad, per se – except for being a total distortion of reality. Yeah, maybe in Beaver Cleaver Walton-ville, whole families get together for super-happy and fun sessions of Wii Sports.

In the real world, these spots are totally unrealistic. Reshoot this commercial with the mom stumbling through Wii Tennis with a scotch in her other hand and the dad screaming at the kids for letting down the team. Plus it needs no fewer than two controllers exploding against the wall after being flung in frustration-fueled rage. Then it will resemble an actual family Wii experience.

13. A nightmarish living baby doll! Oh, and a PS3.

PS3 Commercial – Watch more Funny Videos

Let’s see. We’re the biggest console seller in the world, the Playstation has an enormous fanbase, and we’re about to drop a machine that is more powerful than anything our competitors are making. How should we market it?

For Sony, apparently this is how. By creating a spot that’s equal parts WTF and horror movie introduction.

I half-expected M. Night Shyamalan’s name to appear somewhere in there before the end.

12. Kids think rap is cool, so they’ll buy Link’s Awakening…right?

What is it with the early 1990s and terrible, terrible rap songs?

There are so many fails involved in this spot, it’s hard to count them all. Someone thought this idea up. Someone filmed it. Someone picked that location. Someone equated all these urban, industrial visual ideas with a Gameboy game in which you play some kind of fairy boy fighting monsters. Someone wrote that rap about Zelda.

But they all got off easy, because there’s only one guy who’s face is attached to it all – the poor schmo who took the acting gig. That paycheck was not worth it, guy.

11. Bad special effects to go with bad 3DO graphics

Guess how real the Panasonic REAL 3DO is? So real, in order to really drive the point home, some marketing genius ripped off a bunch of cliches from cartoons that had been around for decades by this point. Brilliant.

Hot Halo: Reach Cosplay (PIC)

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 04:47 PM PDT

I know what you’re thinking. “What is Samus Aran doing wearing Spartan armor?” I know, I’m there too.

You’ll have to ask Bungie, because this very attractive Spartan was the official Halo: Reach model at PAX this year. She was playing “Kat,” a member of Noble 6.

Now that I think back, I actually snapped a picture of her, but with the helmet on. She is “Spartan Lady” in our PAX photo gallery.

Anyway, here is a video of her saying “um” a lot.

‘I’m the Freeman’ Fan Movie Could Be Awesome (TRAILER)

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 03:52 PM PDT

Check out what popped up on the Internet: an extremely cool teaser trailer for a fan movie called “I’m the Freeman,” based on Valve’s Half-Life 2. Watch the trailer below.

The video was created by Marco Spitoni, and according to his Web site, he made this with little more than a PC, some 3D software, and brilliance.

Go ahead and check out Spitoni’s site, cee-gee.net, for a bunch of other CG movies he’s created. While you’re at it, maybe write Valve and tell them to throw some money at this guy – a full-length Half-Life 2 film from Spitoni would not be a bad idea, if this trailer is any indication.

Japanese PSOne Classics Coming to North American Playstation Store Next Week

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 01:05 PM PDT

A little over a week ago, the above image found its way into a US Playstation Blog post, but they didn’t make a giagantic deal about imports coming to the North American store, and so we missed it. (I don’t really hear anyone talking unless they yell.)

Anyway, the news today isn’t really news, but we are going to draw your attention to it. Monday marks the launch of the PSOne Imports in the Playstation Store, and this week we’ll be able to grab two titled: Cho Aniki and Gaiaseed. This is pretty cool, because those two have never been available in the States, and from here on out you’ll be able to look forward to many other formerly Japan-only titles making their way into your PS3. Good times, all.

President Obama Promotes Video Game Design Contest

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 12:47 PM PDT

Education is  good thing. I know a few of my readers think that’s not true, but they’re wrong.

President Obama has this initiative, I’m told, to encourage science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, and as a part of that initiative, the Joan Ganze Cooney Center and E-Line Medi in conjuction with AD, the ESA and Microsoft are holding a game design competition, the first ever National STEM Video Game Challenge.

“Our success as a nation depends on strengthening America’s role as the world’s engine of discovery and innovation,” my man President Barack said. ”I applaud partners in the National STEM Video Game Challenge for lending their resources, expertise, and their enthusiasm to the task of strengthening America’s leadership in the 21st century by improving education in science, technology, engineering and math.”

Here are the deets, straight from the contest’s home page:

The Developer Prize challenges emerging and experienced game developers to design mobile games, includinFg games for the mobile Web, for young children (grades pre-K through 4) that teach key STEM concepts and foster an interest in STEM subject areas.
The Youth Prize engages middle school students (grades 5 through 8) in STEM learning by challenging them to design original video games. The Youth Prize design challenge will be open to middle school students from any U.S. school with a special emphasis on reaching students in underserved urban and rural communities.

The contest is about designing education games, of course, but this is still The Man telling us that games are useful, and so I’ll take it.

Who’s Excited for Naval Battles in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood? (TRAILER)

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 11:42 AM PDT

Answer to the headline’s question: This guy.

Hit the link to check out Ubisoft’s new “Enter Rome” trailer for the upcoming follow-up to Assassin’s Creed 2. It’s good for satiating the hunger for more sword battles and corrupt clergy murders.

Among the cooler things the trailer shows are guns and explosives, specifically as Ezio jumps onto and hijacks a carriage – then uses a mounted gun to massacre some guys on horseback, John Marston-style.

And of course, some kind of flaming death-cannon that looks ready to take down a Renaissance naval ship.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t show anything about AC: Brotherhood‘s multiplayer mode, which goes into beta on Oct. 4.

Download the trailer here. Do it!

New Featured Left 4 Dead 2 Map Takes You to City 17

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 09:19 AM PDT

You remember City 17, right? It was in that little game, oh, what was it called? Oh yeah, Half-Life 2.

Now, Valve is featuring community map for Left 4 Dead 2 that takes the survivors into the bowels of City 17 to see if they can survive. No head-crab zombies in this version of City 17, but there are plenty of the zombies you’ve come to know and love. You can even host these games on Official Dedicated servers this week.

If you want to get in on the Coop and Versus gameplay in City 17, you can download the map right here at FileFront.

Once you have the .vpk file extracted, just double-click the file to install it, or copy into this directory: \Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\addons

Good luck out there…
