Open Letter Of a Daughter to President & CEO of PTCL

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 02:45 AM PST

Open Letter Of a Daughter to President & CEO of PTCL is a post from: ProPakistani

Victimization of PTCL Employees by its Management – Workers Complaint:

In August 2010, PTCL employees staged a country wide strike and protest to increase in salaries upto 50% which was announced by Govt. of Pakistan in the shape of ad-hoc relief.
After one and half month of strike and complete shutdown of PTCL operation, management came to the table to resolve the issues and with mediation of a federal minister, agreed and made commitment to accept all the legal demands of the employees and to not take any action to revenge or victimize any of the employee.

But unfortunately PTCL Management and its HR department did not made there commitment and has started victimizing its employees in the context of disciplinary actions.

They for now have suspended, dismissed and forcibly retired more than 2500 employees from all over the country and has stopped the salaries of the said employees. it is also interesting to note that, the strike was called by the CBA union, but now no one from that union is facing any sort of disciplinary action.

This unjust act of PTCL management is creating serious financial constraints for the affected families and creating chaos in the department as well.

This is a plea of a daughter and all the affected families to the President, SEVP and all the concerned and higher authorities of the PTCL Management to Kindly look into the issue and revert all such orders to save all the affected families from this disaster.

Regards,
Rabia Naz

A Country Without Cyber Law: Pakistan

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 08:11 PM PST

A Country Without Cyber Law: Pakistan is a post from: ProPakistani

law2 thumb A Country Without Cyber Law: PakistanOnline activities are as vulnerable to crime as real life situations are. Law makers, Law enforcement and individuals need to know how to protect themselves. Though Cyber crime used to exist way before the innovation of computer, the only difference involves the tools used to commit the crime.

Some Main types of Cyber Crime are under:

  1. Assault by Threat: Threatening a person with fear for their lives or the lives of their families through Internet e.g. Email, videos or other networks like Mobile Phones etc.
  2. Cyber theft: Using a computer to steal. This includes activities related to DNS cache poisoning, identity theft, fraud embezzlement and unlawful appropriation, espionage etc.
  3. Cyber terrorism: Premeditated, usually politically-motivated violence committed against civilians through the use of, or with the help of, computer technology.
  4. Cyber laundering: electronic transfer of illegally-obtained monies with the goal of hiding its source and possibly its destination.

Though Pakistan is new member of cyber world i.e. Mobile Networks and Broadband connections and only few people know about cyber crime but in fact there is no such law to prevent cyber crimes right now.

One such law called Cyber Crime prevention bill was passed by Pakistan Federal Cabinet on Jan 17, 2007. The proposed law titled as "Prevention of electronic crimes bill" offered penalties ranging from six month of imprisonment to capital punishment for 17 types of cyber crimes including cyber terrorism, hacking of websites and criminal access to secure data.

But this proposed law was unable to get tabled in Parliament and in fact implemented as an ordinance by former President Musharraf on Jan, 07, 2008.

According to Ordinance, the accused could be fined one lack to five lack Rupees or three to ten years imprisonment or both.

Ordinance was later endorsed twice by PPP government for renewal, until it lapsed in November 2009 and was never taken care of then.

As age of any Presidential ordinance is only six weeks from the date of its promulgation in Pakistan, there is no such law at this particular time to prevent cyber crimes in Pakistan.

Current State of Crime in Pakistan

In absence of any such comparative law there is strong urge on our legislators to pass a law that can stand the complexities of today's cyber world and apprehend the accused instead of accusing people of political revenge and calling them the cause of government's own negligence and failure to meet the demands of today's fast moving cyber world.

An FIA official in a conversation with ProPakistani said that agency has been reminding the concerned departments about the lapse of ordinance, but apparently they are either busy doing other businesses or they are deliberately not paying any attention.

He said that Cyber Crime law is supposed to be defined by Ministry of IT and Telecom, as internet domain is fairly covered by IT Ministry. He further added that it is the need of the hour to get Cyber Crime Law get passed from parliament to make it permanent part of Pakistani law.

I recently heard from a friend that you can hack any mobile number and check the record of sent and received text messages and calls. And the misery is that victim can't fight his privacy breach (not to mention coz of law-less land), unless he is a minister and use his influence to impose relevant sections from penal code on culprit.

If this is the situation of crime then one wonders where government is and it is doing to stop such breach of privacy?

propakistani thumb Handsets Import up 213% in Nov 2010 on High Sales and DemandHandset imports registered whopping growth of 213 percent in November 2010 as compared to same month of last fiscal year, Federal Bureau of Statistic (FBS) data showed.

The significant increase in imports depicts the upward demand trend in the local markets to meet the consumers' needs in the different cities including flood-hit areas.

According to FBS, the handset imports have increased to US $43.416 million in November 2010 as against US$ 13.869 million in the same month of 2009.

The imports were also recorded 34 percent high in November 2010 as against October 2010, showing constant month over month growth.

Industry experts said the demand spike also translates into higher sales of the branded and Chinese-made mobile handsets in the country.

The imports of Chinese-made handsets have maintained its growth in the local markets owing to its popularity among the the customers for low-cost and dual-SIM brands.

The imports of branded mobile handset via China have also minimized duty structure of the mobile handsets, showing constant growth in the imports of mobile handsets, they added.

Zeeshan Quershi, Head of Samsung Mobile Pakistan, said the handsets imports were witnessed increasing on high demand of the customers in the local market particularly in flood-hit areas where millions of people had lost their handsets during July to August 2010.

He said the sales in the commercial and flood-hit areas have witnessed growth in the last couple of months.

Quershi explained that Pakistani market has been changed in the last couple of years as the matter of fact share of low-priced handset increased on the eroding purchasing power of the people.

This gadgets business witnessed shift towards low-priced handsets as it indicates 70 percent of the Pakistani market comprised off the buyers having purchasing power up to US $ 50 dollar.

The section of customers could afford mobile handsets ranged US$100 or Rs 8,550 (1 dollar = Rs. 85.50) are now purchasing mobile handsets cost up to US$ 80 or Rs. 6,840. Those could afford up to US$ 80 are now buying US $50/ Rs. 4, 275, he added.

Similarly, a significant number of customers buy handset ranged up to US$20 including cellular phone operators' tagged gadgets.

The sales and purchase of mobile handsets witnessed growth on different reasons. Cellular phone users replace their old handsets with new to use latest technology. Mobile phones are bought when handsets stop functioning. Also, a large number of customers buy new gadgets repeatedly in the case their handsets are stolen at gunpoint.

MicroUSB – New Standard For Mobile Phone Chargers

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 08:09 PM PST

MicroUSB – New Standard For Mobile Phone Chargers is a post from: ProPakistani

clip image0023 MicroUSB – New Standard For Mobile Phone Chargers

Mobile phones have become part and parcel of our daily routine and more often when cell phones are to be charged, it happens that either charger isn't available or it belongs to a different brand.

This situation isn't always faced but probability can't be ruled out.

At times, different models from the same manufacturer have different standards for charging the devices which not only annoys the end user but also frets the manufacturers. Moreover, the purchase of a new device or charger makes the older ones eligible for disposal which contributes to environmental problems.

To standardize the process and make life easier for both manufacturers and end users, an initiative was taken by European Commission back in June 2009. The Commission requested major mobile phone manufacturers to adopt a standard which will be followed for all future mobile phones in Europe.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by 17 mobile phone manufacturers consisting of Nokia, Apple, Research In Motion (RIM), Sony Ericsson, LGE, Samsung, Huawei Technologies, Emblaze Mobile, Motorola, NEC, Alcatel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Atmel.

All manufacturers agreed to adopt Micro-USB as a standard charging socket. Technical specifications for new standard have been approved by European Standardization bodies – CENELEC & ETSI. These specifications define interoperability and also take safety risks and electromagnetic emission of charging devices into account.

Starting from this year, all upcoming mobile phones from aforementioned manufacturers will be having Micro-USB sockets for charging the devices and one charger will be compatible with all mobile phones irrespective of the manufacturer.

Even a Micro-USB data cable connected to a PC/laptop will charge the device thus simplifying things for the user. Nonetheless, this is happening in Europe for the time being but other parts of the world can expect a similar harmonization of the standard.

Majority of the manufacturers have already adopted this standard and there won't be much hassle involved for mobile phone producers in expanding this standard to their globally distributed products.

Nokia N8, for example, is a handset that has support for charging the device both by using standard Nokia charger and Micro-USB cable. Likewise, Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire HD also support charging through micro-USB ports along with many others.
