Hold The Phones, Stephen Fry Has Love For Android Too

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 07:16 AM PDT

Stephen Fry is well known for his dedication to technology and until recently, his exclusive love of Apple products.

The comedian/actor/blogger/tweeter boosted the profile of both HTC and the Android operating system when he published a tweet to his 1.5 million followers yesterday explaining that he didn’t just use his iPhone or iPad to update his Twitter account, at times deciding to use his HTC Desire handset to publish his tweets.

The tweet could be seen as an unofficial endorsement of the HTC Desire, prompting some followers to check out the handset. Others will see it as a complete non-news story.

That, we leave to you to decide.

iMovie for iPhone 4: The Details

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 07:06 AM PDT

One of the coolest features that we saw at WWDC was the announcement about iMovie for iPhone. Though I postulated that it shouldn’t cost the reported $4.99, it’s still a major platform piece, and it will bring about an entirely new sub-genre of video production that a lot of people seem to be keen on having.

During the keynote, however, Jobs didn’t give a lot of information about iMovie for iPhone, he instead focused on a few features and then moved on. We now have, thanks to an article at TidBITS, some more insight about the upcoming app.

Here’s the quick rundown, then we’ll talk about what we see:

  • iPhone 4 only
  • Can only be edited on the phone “currently”
  • Most likely can work with imported clips
  • No iPad compatability
  • Will ship June 24th, with the iPhone 4

iPhone 4 only.  Read that carefully.  You won’t be able to run iMovie for iPhone on any other platform, reportedly because the processing requirements are simply too high.

As for only being edited on the phone “currently”, I’m going to lay my chips down and say that this will change pretty quickly.  In order for products created in iMovie for iPhone to come to their full potential, we’ll need to be able to export and continue editing on the desktop.  It’s a simple matter of usability.

Imported clips is another area that wasn’t specificially addressed, but here’s why it makes sense:  At present, you can pull clips from the Camera Roll, which are clips you’ve already shot.  It would make sense then that you’d be able to import properly-formatted clips into the camera roll and use them within iMovie for the iPhone.  If this isn’t the case, we’d be hugely surprised.

The lack of iPad integration, honestly, isn’t that surprising.  However, it’s good that we have clarification on this now.  TidBITS postulates, and I’d have to agree, that it’s due to the pixel density limitation of the iPad.  Though the iPad is beautiful, it simply doesn’t have the same density of the iPhone 4 and wouldn’t make much sense as an editing platform at present.

We’re looking forward, as many are, to playing with the new iMovie app, and we’ll of course give you a full review on June 24th.

Motorola: Expect A 2GHz Smartphone By End Of Year

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 06:00 AM PDT

If Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola’s consumer business and mobile devices division, is to believed we can expect a range of Motorola smartphones shipping with 2GHz processors by the end of the year.

The new smartphones, first noted by tech site Conceivably Tech, will boost Motorola’s existing range of Android powered handsets with the addition of extra features including a dedicated nVidia Tegra-based graphics processor, a gyroscope and hardware accelerated Flash 10.1 support.

As ITProPortal quite rightly points out, there are currently no processors capable of delivering the 2GHz processing power that Motorola expect to include in its smartphones, with other manufacturers opting to use Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor until the new technology hits the market.

They also note:

If Motorola succeeds in bringing this technology to the market, it will be the first manufacturer to effectively double the speed of smartphones in just a year.

If your mobile phone has a 2GHz processor, who needs a netbook (or even a laptop?)

Photobucket reaches into mobile with new BlackBerry app and a new focus.

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 03:40 AM PDT

In the world of online photo storage and sharing, there’s really no name quite as big as Photobucket.  Long before the names Flickr and Picasa made their marks, Photobucket was already racking up users worldwide.  Presently, over 100 million people choose Photobucket to store and share their photos, and the company has a new focus on mobile that is being done right.

As of today, Photobucket has released a new BlackBerry application that is showing off that mobile focus.  Since merging with Ontela back in December, Photobucket has gotten some new funding and this new application is one of the products of that.

Blackberry users can now easily upload and download from the site, browse the “Find Stuff” content categories and search Photobuckets over seven billion public images and photos.

Photobucket is very quick to point out that the mobile applications mean much more than just what’s on the surface.  As I said, Photobucket has a new focus on mobile.

I had a chance to speak with Rob Newton, from Photobucket, and he had this to add:

“Mobile is truly a vehicle to bring more users and usage of our site, and also is showing people that Photobucket is much more than a warehouse for image storage; it is a cross-platform multi use social networking utility that allows people to do more than ever before with their images, and from anywhere they have cell coverage.”

Ready to get in on it?  Head over to your BlackBerry App World and search up Photobucket.  Though the BlackBerry application is the newest, there are also versions for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.
