PAX 2010: Hands-On with Donkey Kong Country Returns Posted: 09 Sep 2010 10:38 PM PDT When I was a kid and had an SNES, I didn’t have a lot of games for it, so I just played the ones I had over and over again, with the main titles being NFL Quarterback Club 96 and Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2. I also had the third Donkey Kong Country, but I didn’t really like it much. So while I, as I tend not to, have no real nostalgic desire to get my hands on Retro Studios’ Donkey Kong Country Returns, I was certainly curious to see if it could stand up next to those SNES titles I loved so much, because if I don’t get my hands on it myself, how am I supposed to know whether or not I should make fun of the folks who will inevitably be obsessed with it once it arrives in November? So I knew when I paid a visit to the Nintendo booth at PAX that I had to give it a try. Well, guess what. I liked it. For my demo, I chose to try out the new game’s mine kart level. I mean, of course I did. In the level I found mine karts. And I found barrels that shoot me across the screen. And I found the letters that make up the word “Kong” scattered throughout the level. And it felt all so very familiar. In terms of design and controls, what I found was a bona fide Donkey Kong Country game. Happy wuz me. There is a new twist, of course: co-op. (Nintendo doesn’t want you to play the Wii by yourself.) Co-op play is difficult, on one hand, because the two players must be in sync enough to, when it comes to jumping in barrels and hopping to and from mine karts, do everything at the same time. On the other had, each player get his or her own set of lives, so from that standpoint it’s forgiving. Oh, and it’s also forgiving in that Donkey getting hit by a bee doesn’t immediately knock him out. You actually get three health hearts this time. Those don’t help when you fall down a mine shaft, however. Conclusion: The big question all along has been, “Is this a legit Donkey Kong Country game?” Yes, it is. It really is like playing a co-op better looking version of one of the SNES DKC games. So you can feel pretty confident, based on my very reliable word alone, that come November 21, you can pick this up and pretty much know what you’re in for. |
David Cage Sounds Off on the Playstation Move Posted: 09 Sep 2010 03:49 PM PDT
That’s Quantic Dream’s David Cage speaking to Gamesindustry.biz about the Playstation Move, and it sounds to me like he’s taking a jab at the Wii there. He does, however, think the Move, which he and Quantic dream developed, is pretty killer in regards to Heavy Rain, which will be patched to work with the Move later this year.
Honestly, I think Heavy Rain will be way better with the Move. On the other hand, a new motion controller won’t fix the broken-ass story and terrible voice acting. BAM. |
Sony Marks Playstation’s 15th Anniversary with Giant Infographics Posted: 09 Sep 2010 02:48 PM PDT Fifteen years ago today, the Playstation launched in North America. And, obviously, this is a big deal to Sony, and so somebody over there at SCEA put together a pair of bulky infographics about Playstation stuff. The first is just random fun facts about the preferences of the people who like Playstation. A few notes. Kratos is a rotten choice for favorite Playstation character. I am in that 10% who say the ladies in my life must be cool with my gaming obsession. Pizza, chips and popcorn are terrible gaming snacks because you’ll get grease and salt all over your hands; veggies are good, though, and I prefer carrots. Moving on. Our second Sony graphic is a Playstation timeline. You might notice an important item is missing. See if you can figure out what it is. What’s missing? The introduction of the Dual Analog controller for the Playstation in 1997, of course. Fun times. |
New Portal 2 Co-op Trailer is Awesome Posted: 09 Sep 2010 01:34 PM PDT We’ve seen this trailer before, but all we had was the captured version from PAX last weekend. Now, Valve has rolled out the primo footage of the two robots you’ll play as in your co-op adventures. Check out all the footage of the Cooperative Testing Initiative in the embed below, or jump on our fast, free servers and download it to your PC. Blizzard Releases First Ever Official StarCraft II Custom Map Posted: 09 Sep 2010 11:17 AM PDT No doubt you’ve been poring over our ongoing How To series on modding StarCraft II and are dutifully busy getting used to useful-but-confusing Galaxy Editor. So far, that tool hasn’t been officially supported, Blizzard’s position being, basically, that it’s a courtesy, so don’t get your hopes up for changes to the tool based on player demand. Too late. Consider our hopes officially upped. Yesterday, Blizzard released their first ever official custom map, “Burning Tide”. Apparently not named after an 80s action movie, it’s a 3v3 map that repurposes elements from the single-player “The Devil’s Playground” mission for a multiplayer game whose goal can be best summed up as “gotta get that scrilla”. Expect co-op play and ruthless competition as grizzled teams battle it out to seize total control of game specific limited resources. Plus, timed lava surges and collectible mineral caches. It’s just like American Foreign Policy in the Middle East! Minus Toby Keith. Obviously this is great news for SCII obsessives, and guaranteed we’re playing as soon as we get home. But what really has us excited is the tantalizing possibility that Blizzard might be getting more deeply involved with the editing tool they have, so far, been a little too nonchalant about. Maybe this means more official custom maps. Maybe extremely popular maps made by community members will be knighted, so to speak. Aw heck, while we’re wildly speculating, why not baselessly hope that they’ll consider one day adding the Zerg and Protoss to the single player campaign? DO THAT PLEASE. You can play it now; just open your copy of SCII and look in the custom games list in the game client. |
Cryptic’s Jack Emmert Reveals More Neverwinter Details Posted: 09 Sep 2010 10:38 AM PDT
In a recent interview with Voodoo Extreme, Cryptic’s Jack Emmert talked at length about the 2011 game. Neverwinter, while an online RPG is not meant to be an MMO in any traditional sense according to the developer. The game will use the same engine as Cryptic’s two current titles – Champions Online and Star Trek Online, but it is not meant to compete in the traditional massively multi-player online world, instead focusing on user-created scenarios and a core overplot written by fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore. “[Salvatore] is writing a trilogy that’s set in Neverwinter and from a storyline perspective much of our game ties in to what his novel is doing. So from that standpoint we’ve had many creative meetings back and forth. We’re taking his novel and his characters and seeing how we can thread that into our game.” “It’s a cooperative thing where he’s got his novels and he’s been happy to share ideas back and forth. Obviously with Wizards of the Coast too, we’ve been in story meetings, hashing things out. He’s a brilliant author and I don’t want to say that Cryptic is in any way setting the storylines for his trilogy. It’s more like he has some great ideas and stories for Neverwinter.” Along with clarifying the story element, Emmert confirmed that the game would launch with the five core D&D classes – Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, Rogue and Ranger. The core race options however are still being nailed down. Neverwinter is also the first game to use Wizard’s of the Coast’s latest version of D&D, the 4th Edition. “The mechanics have been changed but they’ll be familiar. By and large, we’re trying to keep as faithful as we could to 4th edition rules.” Emmert stressed that the game was aiming for a feel far more like Bethesda’s Oblivion or Bioware’s Dragon Age than World of Warcraft or Lord of the Rings Online. You can read the complete interview on Voodoo Extreme’s website. |
Valve’s Gabe Newell Discusses Problems with XBox Live Posted: 09 Sep 2010 10:21 AM PDT Gabe Newell is really a fun guy to listen to. He rarely makes a secret of what he thinks, so he’s always great for quotable material. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Valve’s head honcho discussed his company’s assumptions about XBox Live, and how flawed they were. When asked if their mistake with Live was assuming that they would be able to update their games more often, Newell replied,
He went on to say that this was why they were now working with Sony, saying,
It’s not a secret that Microsoft has maintained live as an essentially closed service since its launch, and Valve isn’t the first developer to recently point this out. You may recall that Rockstar included all their free DLC in the latest paid DLC pack for Red Dead Redemption, citing the limit on the amount of free packs they can release on Live as the reason. All this raises a question: will any of this matter to Live users? After all, PlayStation Network is a fairly robust offering for free these days, and PlayStation Plus was priced at $49.99 to directly compete with XBox Live. Now that Live’s gone up, with anyone jump ship to PSN? Will Steamworks integration count for anything? Only time will tell. |

Level Up Storage Solution Towers Above Others Posted: 09 Sep 2010 07:57 AM PDT
To that end, the company introduced custom built Towers that allow players to combine all their favorite things in one attractive container. The Level Up Towers are built with each of the major console platforms in mind. Versions for Wii, 360 and PS3 are customized to best store the associated parts. "The concept behind LevelUp is simple: gaming gear shouldn't clutter the home," said Jason , Lemelson, President of Level Up. "Our line of affordable towers makes it easy for every day consumers to keep their accessories in a functional tower that looks cool in any entertainment or gaming environment." The only challenge is for those of us who own all three consoles. we’ll quickly run out of floor space with all these towers cluttering up our front rooms. I guess the best approach might be a hybrid one – put the Wii back in the footlocker where it gathers dust, leave the PS3 next to the receiver and promote the 360 to a place of honor in a tower. One other nice feature standard on all the towers is the ability to also store Rock Band or Guitar Hero gitars in handy clips. Level Up has a master plan to get these towers into homes. When the products launch in October, you will be able to pick them up at Toys’r'Us, Bed Bath, & Beyond and JC Penny stores. Some versions will be exclusive to certain retailers. You can find details in the images in the gallery below. No pricing was initally available from the company’s website. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Gearbox Details Next Borderland DLC Posted: 09 Sep 2010 07:35 AM PDT So, Borderlands. Gearbox’s quirky shooter/RPG gained a big following upon its release, consuming many of us here at FileFront. Not only did we play the original game to death, but we grabbed up all the DLC and played that too. Given all that, you’ll understand our excitement with the upcoming DLC, Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution. Unlike the General Knoxx add-on, this DLC won’t raise the level cap. However, Gearbox is issuing a free patch prior to the release of this DLC that will raise the level cap for everyone by eight levels. If you only have the original game, you’ll be able to level to 58. If you own General Knoxx, you’ll be able to get all the way to level 69. The Revolution DLC puts Claptrap in the forefront, opening with a diorama-style tale of Claptraps revolting, taking over, and beginning to modify the populace. You’ll be able to adventure across six new zones. These zones are targeted at foot travel, so the emphasis on vehicles is much less than it was in General Knoxx. You’ll venture out from Tartarus Station, picking up quests that will take you throughout the new areas. You’ll encounter lots of new enemies, as well as a number of old enemies that have been given the ‘claptrap treatment.’ Think cyborg skags, and you’re on the right track about what to expect. You can also expect to see familiar faces like General Knoxx and Dr. Ned, who have been re-animated through the magic of Claptrap technology. Much like the other DLC offerings, Revolution’s content will scale with your level, meaning that you can visit it whenever you like, and as many times as you like. Going through twice will net you two skill points and six SDUs to increase your storage space. It should come as no surprise that Gearbox is continuing the goofy/silly theme of the game. You’ll see Claptraps armed with boxing gloves, and you’ll even see campaign posters starring Claptraps in place of folks like Obama and Che Guevara. Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution will be released into the wild on September 28th on PC, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360, and will run you $10. Until then, you’ll just have to keep grinding Crawmerax for new goodies. You can also check out our Borderlands page for all the latest news, and all of our Borderlands files. [Via IGN] |
