| How to Choose Between Nvidia SLI and ATI CrossFire Posted: 10 Jun 2010 07:48 PM PDT
No longer can 1 GPU with 256MB of memory deliver the visual fidelity “power gamers” expect. Try turning on full-screen anti-aliasing, full shadows and anisotropic filtering in the latest blockbuster and watch your frame rate crawl. How does a PC gamer cope? Well, aside from buying prohibitively expensive CPU and RAM upgrades you should consider adding multiple video cards to your system to help. We cut through the hype and explain what the multiple-GPU landscape of SLI and CrossFire really means to you and how to choose the best solution to match your hardware and budget. Table of Contents
Official Disclaimer: Step 1: Assumptions Part 2: Why Use Multiple-GPUs to Play Games? By and large as a gamer, the multi-GPU question centers on how well do you want your cutting edge games to run. Theoretically and in the promises of both ATI and Nvidia running multiple GPUs can increase the performance and visual fidelity of games by a huge percentage. Games can be run at maximum resolution, with all video options enabled at over 60 frames per second. Theoretically. The reality is a little less satisfying. Games that recognize multiple GPUs will utilize them but few gamers have the right combination of hardware and software to make all their games run fast and smoothly. It’s a good idea to research your favorite games and see if it supports multiple GPUs out of the box. The next step is to find out which one it works best with – Crossfire or SLI. Step 3: How Does SLI work? When 3dfx was acquired by Nvidia the technology was overhauled and refined and the current version works only with PCI-Express x16 based graphics cards and motherboards. The video cards work in a master-slave setup and share the work of rendering a 3D scene thanks to parallel processing. SLI also requires Nvidia-based motherboard chipsets to be compatible. One video card will draw a portion of a scene while the other will complete the task on the remaining part. How this happens and which part is rendered by each card is determined by the SLI mode the system or program is set to use. There are four primary modes of SLI processing, three for rendering and one to make anti-aliasing faster:
There are multiple SLI configurations in use today from two GPUs/Video Cards to Tri(3) and Quad(4) card setups. The main limitations are that video cards used in an SLI configuration must use the same type of video chipset. They can be from different manufacturers or even individually overclocked but the chipset must be the same. SLI video cards do not have to have the same amount of video RAM, but the system will never use more RAM than the smaller cards have available on any SLI video card. CrossFire requires PCI-Express x16 slots on the motherboard and will work with AMD/ATI or Intel based chipsets. CrossFire splits the load of rendering 3D scenes like SLI but since it supports “unmatched” cards in a configuration it handles the workload a little differently. There are four rendering methods in Crossfire configurations:
Crossfire also supports two and four GPU configurations (under CrossFireX). ATI’s CrossFire allows similar GPUs within the same generations (i.e. HD 5750 and HD 5770) and works using AMD/ATI and Intel motherboard chipsets. ATI relies on its Catalyst A.I to render CrossFire profiles, when no profile is available it defaults to Scissor and cannot be changed. Nvidia’s SLI controls allow users to customize the method used to render applications as needed. Step 6: When is One Solution Better than the Other?

| Fallout: New Vegas Pre-order Perks Posted: 10 Jun 2010 06:47 PM PDT The premise here is simple. If you pre-order New Vegas from one of a couple retailers, you get a retailer-specific package of in-game items. There are five participating retailers and four packs, which means two of the retailers have to share a pack. No word on how much they hate each other as a result of this. Hit the jump for more. Here are your pre-order packs, as listed in the press release:
What do these packs tell us about the game? Well, there’s a larger variety of weapons and items. Super stimpaks means I won’t have to press heal like eight times when I get badly injured. Repair kits sound like the best thing in the world. That’s all I got. Choose wisely. Share and Enjoy: |
| Mortal Kombat 9 Announcement Trailer is Brutal, Exciting Posted: 10 Jun 2010 06:28 PM PDT You may have thought that Mortal Kombat short film from yesterday was a live-action trailer for an upcoming MK game, but you’d be wrong. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive officially announced the newest iteration of Mortal Kombat, the dark-and-bloody fighting series that made “fatality” a household phrase. There’s a new trailer included with the announcement, and boy, it’s a real violent treat that takes me back to the good ole days. Video and initial details after the jump.
The new Mortal Kombat, ostensibly titled simply “Mortal Kombat,” is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by NetherRealm Studios. Series creator Ed Boon is Creative Director on the project, and described the new MK beautifully: “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever.” It’s almost odd for a developer to describe a plan for an upcoming game that is so completely right on. Right? Anyway, we’ll keep an eye out for any news on this next week at E3. Here’s a list of new features planned for Mortal Kombat:

| Mass Effect Comic Get Graphic Novel Treatment Posted: 10 Jun 2010 04:50 PM PDT
The book hit shelves and online retailers this week, and while the MSRP is an absurd $16.99, which is more than buying all four issues individually, you can great it now from DeepDiscount for $10.19 with free shipping with the coupon code 25MORE. Which I will now do. Follow my lead? It comes from Mac Walters, lead scribe on ME2, so get over yourself and buy it, fanboy. Share and Enjoy: |
| “Legendary Name” to Reveal “Top Secret New Project” on GameTrailers TV Posted: 10 Jun 2010 04:06 PM PDT Have you seen the new teaser for Friday’s episode of SpikeTV’s GameTrailers TV? It will allegedly be a pre-E3 spectacular, chock-full of sneak peaks of games like Killzone 3 and The Force Unleashed 2, and on top of it all, “one of the most legendary names in gaming unveils his top secret new project.” My guess? It’s whatever Hideo Kojima is working on with Squeenix. But that’s just a wild guess, based on nothing at all. I suppose we’ll find out tomorrow for sure. Hit the jump for the GTTV teaser. | Where Are All the 3D Xbox 360 Games? Posted: 10 Jun 2010 02:48 PM PDT
Oliver made a number of other vague comments, and you can read them over at Develop. And that’s the whole story here. Yes, it’s slight, but, hey, it could be something, so I’m posting it. Maybe we’ll get some 360 3D game announcements at E3. Maybe we’ll get some derp derp blah blah blah. Oh, and I’d like to point out that 3D+Natal=sense. Really, the whole “act like you’re physically interacting with what’s onscreen” makes a lot more sense if it’s in 3D. Share and Enjoy: |
| New Starcraft II Trailer to Air During Tonight’s NBA Finals Posted: 10 Jun 2010 01:23 PM PDT I know lots of gamers who are NBA fans, and several who are not. Regardless of your stance on the NBA, you may want to tune in to tonight’s Game 4 of the NBA finals between the Lakers and the Celtics. It seems Blizzard wants to show some never-before-seen cinematic footage to those of you who are glued to the Finals, and they’re obviously willing to pay the premium advertising price that comes along with that airtime. The footage will also feature voice-overs from two well-known Starcraft characters. This isn’t the first game advertising in a major sporting event. Everyone remembers the Dante’s Inferno Super Bowl ad, and that one appeared to have a very positive response. So, if you’re a Starcraft fan, tune in tonight to see the latest trailer. You might also see some decent basketball, but that’s not likely in a NBA game. Share and Enjoy: |

| Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:39 AM PDT Hey, so those PS4 videos? Not legit, a Sony PR rep told Game Informer. “I can confirm that this video is not from SCE,” the rep said. I think the rep is either lying or wrong. Those vids are too well put together and too tonally in line with past Playstation marketing efforts for them to not be Sony-produced. I do, however, think whoever put them out probably thought it would be funny to slap “PS4″ on the end of them to mess with us. What I’m asserting is: these are actual ads by Sony for the Playstation brand, but they never were PS4-related. Click here to see the vids. Also, PR people usually only know what they’re told, and because of that, (gasp!) not everything they say is true. PR folks say what their companies want said. Share and Enjoy: |
| Just Cause 2 and ATI HD 5970 with Eyefinity In Violent Conflict Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:36 AM PDT
[H]ardOCP confirmed with AMD that there are issues for this combination of hardware and software and a fix is expected in the upcoming 10.6 Catalyst release. Apparently, sometimes it’s more than the local population in league against you when you’re attempting to take over a 3rd world country, sometimes it’s your hardware as well. Share and Enjoy: |

| Posted: 10 Jun 2010 08:58 AM PDT We’ve been anxiously awaiting the details of Rock Band 3, both because we love the series, and because we want to know if the keytar rumor is real. Now the wait is over, as USA Today has blown the lid off Rock Band 3 in a big way. First off, the keytar is out. Harmonix is adding a fully-functional,25-key MIDI keyboard. Players will have a full two-octave range to cover, and according to project director Daniel Sussman,
Check out facts about new guitar controllers, revealed songs, and a USA Today video after the break. Yeah, that’s right, new guitar controllers. But these aren’t your average plastic guitar simulators. One is a full-sized Fender Squier Stratocaster six string that uses sensors in the neck to determine where your fingers are on the strings. The other is from Mad Catz, and features a field of buttons on each fret, on a body modeled after a Fender Mustang Pro. In addition, you can expect a new drum kit with three cymbals added on. All of these new instruments will interact with Pro Mode, which features more realistic notations much closer to real-world music. You’ll be able to play pro mode on your instrument, even if no one else in your band does. Speaking of bands, you can grow yours up to seven people, all utilizing drop-in, drop-out gameplay. They’ll also be able to change instruments or difficulty settings without restarting the current song. It will be easier to find your songs as well, thanks to a new song filtering system. Harmonix senior designer Dan Teasdale describes it as, “a really cool way to take your full library down to a manageable list of songs. You can say, ‘only show me songs in Rock Band 3′ or ‘only songs under three minutes’ or ‘Eighties metal songs from my (downloadable) collection.’ ” You can also expect a revamped story mode, newer, more customizable tours that can be finished in an evening instead of a week, and a whole range of achievement-like goals. Harmonix senior designer Sylvain Dubrofsky says of the changes, “If you ever had any aspirations of connecting with the music in a deeper way … you are really going to like Rock Band 3.” Check out this list of songs that have been confirmed as well: 2000s 1990s 1980s 1960s-1970s All these additions and reveals are really getting me excited to get my hands on the game next week at E3. Stay tuned here, and we’ll let you know just how these changes play out. Share and Enjoy: |
