| The History of Settlements on the Severn River Posted: 11 Jun 2010 02:00 AM PDT We have mentioned that there are beautiful homes available in the Downs on the Severn community in Annapolis. Did you know that this area was the site of one of Maryland’s early colonial settlements? The people who came to the area started the first town in what was now call Anne Arundel County. About midway through the 17th century, colonist settled on the Severn River. The town on the Severn River was left in favor Annapolis. Annapolis had the superior harbor and in those days when travel by water was so very important for both people and cargo, you can understand the need to be near a a top notch harbor. These days one does not have to be near the water, but is nice to be close to it for recreation or just for the view. We tend not to travel by water as much as they did during colonial times, however the Downs on the Severn community does provide quick access a modern-day transportation hub (BWI Airport). And while you do not need to wait for your 'ship to come in' to get supplies, you will appreciate the fact that Downs on the Severn is very near to a major shopping center.
