LG Viewty Snap GM360 – Full Touch Camera Phone with Optical Zoom

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 10:17 PM PDT

The megapixel race seems to be over (at least for the moment), and the manufacturers have by and large regained their senses. The focus has shifted from boosting the megapixel count to increasing the quality of pictures taken and improving upon the feature set offered.

One feature that has remained elusive in mobile phones is optical zoom. The major prohibiting factor is obviously the bulk added by the protruding optical zoom capable lens. Back in March, Spice had launched a 12 megapixel camera phone with 3x optical zoom. Now LG has entered the arena with its LG Viewty Snap GM360.

The Viewty Snap features a 5 megapixel camera with optic-all zoom and LED flash. Optic-all zoom is LG’s special zooming technology which can magnify images without sacrificing quality. At the same time, it doesn’t require bulky lenses associated with traditional optical zoom capable devices. LG isn’t saying much about the magnification level possible. In fact, they aren’t saying much about the rest of the features either.

However, we do know that it will have a 3 inch TFT touchscreen display with 256K colors at a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels, MP3/WMA/eAAC+ audio player, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player, FM Radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP. Social Networking, Email, SMS and MMS capabilities are obviously present. What is missing though is GPS and 3G support.

The Viewty Snap could have been a killer camera phone. But, it probably wouldn’t be. It's perplexing that LG didn’t include Xenon flash in a camera phone. The megapixel count is also lower than most other camera phones in the market. Let’s hope that LG is using a damn good optics. In the end, everything will most probably come down to the pricing. If Viewty Snap GM360 is cheap enough, LG might just manage to win over casual buyers looking for a stylish touchscreen phone with a decent camera.

Samsung B7722 Duos Announced: Coming to India Soon

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 07:45 PM PDT

While cheap dual SIM phones are a dime a dozen, high end dual SIM devices are still somewhat of a rarity. The just launched Samsung B7722 Duos attempts to address this deficiency. It is a GSM phone in which one SIM can run on 3G while the other must operate on GPRS/EDGE.

The full touch Duos deploys a 3.2 inch touchscreen with 256K colors and 240 x 400 pixels. It has a capable 5 mega-pixel camera with LED flash, which snaps pictures at a resolution of 2592х1944, and records QVGA videos at 30fps. As expected from a high end phone, the B7722 supports plenty of multimedia formats including MP3, WAV, WMA, eAAC+, MP4, H.263 and H.264. Although it lacks GPS support, Google Maps and Mobile tracker are included. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, Push Email, Instant Messaging and MicroSD cards up to 8 GB are also supported.

The Duos will cost $510 in the US and is slated to be launched later this month in Sweden. It’s not known when it will be launched in India, but it is expected to cost around Rs. 23,000.

iPhone 4 Will Be Available At Wal-Mart On June 24th

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 09:11 AM PDT

Pre-ordering for the latest iPhone starts June 15th and it will be available at Apple and AT&T stores on June 24th. However, it seems like Apple has a more aggressive sale goals this time. For the first time, the new iPhone will also be sold through a number of large retail chains including Wal-Mart and BestBuy.

iPhone 4

Lot of retailers have previously carry iPhones but none of them have been lucky enough to sell the device on its launch day. This will provide people some convenient alternatives and cut the lines short at Apple and AT&T stores. From Apple’s point of view, it will be easier to cater to the already huge and growing demand of iPhone buyers and not make them wait for hours. Plus, this strategy is in sync with Apple’s plan to sell more iPhone units than ever before. According to this latest report from Apple Insider, Apple has ordered enough parts to sell an average of 3 Million iPhone 4’s per month.

Asia Optical is a company that makes VGA lens kits for Apple iPhone 4 camera and according to its chairman Robert Lai, they are currently delivering 3 million units per month to Apple. If Apple does sell 3 million units per month, this will be a 20% increase in year-over-year sales.

iPhone 4 has Wi-Fi Driver Issues, the Cause of the Wi-Fi Mishap at WWDC is Revealed

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 11:57 PM PDT

The WWDC Wi-Fi mishap has brought Steve Jobs and Apple a lot of embarrassment and has sent people all over the world out on a treasure hunt to find the cause for this. Earlier, it was believed that the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the room was so high that the iPhone 4 could not fetch that list. Though recently, experts are of the opinion that it can as well be a real problem with the iPhone itself.

Experts believe that this is a pre-release version of iPhone 4 OS. That, coupled with some Wi-Fi driver issues caused the Wi-Fi problem at WWDC. Glenn Fleishman at Ars Technica investigated into this and talked to Phil Belanger in the process. Phil Belanger is a renowned network expert. Phil Kearney, who happens to be an ex-Apple employee, was also contacted by Ars in this matter, was of the same opinion as Phil Belanger. This was indeed a driver problem.

The availability of multiple networks was surely a valid reason as it caused a huge congestion in the wireless network in that room. Though, given the power of a Mi-Fi network (being used at large in the room), it was not a powerful enough congestion to stop all communication!

Ars makes a roundup of the situation by pointing out that both the 3GS and 4G were in close proximity eliminating chances of any blind spot in a network. iPhone 4, powered by the improved 802.11n Wi-Fi chip was expected to perform better than the 802.11b powered devices. The blame clearly falls on the iPhone 4 OS Wi-Fi driver.

On a final thought, now that the cause of the Wi-Fi failure is public, iPhone 4 OS should soon get a better Wi-Fi driver that works.
