3G Looks a Distant Idea, Another Seminar Concluded

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 03:16 AM PDT

3G Looks a Distant Idea, Another Seminar Concluded is a post from: ProPakistani

PTA Seminar 3G 3G Looks a Distant Idea, Another Seminar ConcludedPakistan Telecommunication Authority organized a seminar today at Sarena, Islamabad, to highlight various aspects of 3G mobile broadband services and 3G spectrum auctions in Pakistan, policy and regulation issues.

Minister In-charge for IT and Telecom, Sardar Mohammad Latif Khan Khosa was the chief guest, while IT Secretary Naguib Ullah Malik was the guest of honor. PTA Chairman Dr Mohammed Yaseen chaired the panel discussion.

Representatives of Mobilink, Telenor, Zong, SCO, PTCL, Warid, Ufone, NSN, Ericsson, ZTE, Huawei, Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Qualcom and CDMA Forum were present at the event.

Chairman PTA, qualcomm, CDMA forum representatives addressed the seminar along with their presentations.

Network companies naturally advocated the needs of 3G and how it will revolutionize the mobile broadband in the country, but on other hands, cellular operators were not sure if 3G makes a good business case or not.

PTA, as a regulator, thinks 3G has an opportunity and it should be explored.

Mr. Latif Khosa, Minister of for IT and Telecom at one occasion publicly said to Chairman PTA that if PTA can arrange 1/5th of the spectrum auction price of India (USD 15 billion), i.e., USD 3 billion, then he can ask the government to auction 3G licenses right away. (He gave the chairman an almost impossible mission to accomplish)

Apparently, government is waiting for the best time to reap the maximum monetary value of licenses. Some industry experts fear that this wait may deprive the country of 3G technology altogether.

It merits mentioning here that recent 3G auction in India has put more pressure on PTA follow the suit in Pakistan. But difference in business scenarios in both countries, in-decision by government and reluctant attitude of cellular operators here is delaying the process.

PTA is planning another two seminar on same topic in Karachi and Lahore in next month or two at most. It maybe recalled that PTA has conducted set of seminars on 3G in the past as well.

On additional note, for those who want to study the pros and cons of 3G for Pakistan's market, a very insightful discussion is going over the same topic on TGP.

It is estimated that cellular companies will have to invest half a billion dollar each for 3G license and to lay network in three major cities in Pakistan. One segment of industry say that ARPUs are too low to invest half billion dollar (at least), while others refer to GSM boom and say one has to create a need to make it a requirement – maybe now Pakistanis don’t ask for 100 MB link over mobile phone, but they may love it once they are offered such a service.

Things You Should Know Before Getting DSL!

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:21 PM PDT

Things You Should Know Before Getting DSL! is a post from: ProPakistani

DSL is rapidly making its in-roads in Pakistani market and seeing this trend it is safe to predict this technology will surely reach to rural areas in a very short span of time. In Pakistan, DSL connection is offered on the same existing telephone line usually.

So next time you opt for a DSL connection for your home or place of work, do not forget to raise a few important questions/issues which will not only enhance your level of understanding but also help you utilize the facility more efficiently and effectively. These questions pertain to telephone line health status as [SNR] margins, upload and download bandwidth operated on the same line.

DSL connection TIPS:

  • Wikipedia has classified Best SNR margins into different categories. It is of prime importance to check SNR margin on the direct line without using DSL connection divider or usually called (splitter). The wikipedia classification is as under
    • 6dB or below is bad and will experience no sync or intermittent sync problems
    • 7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
    • 11dB-20dB is good with no sync problems
    • 20dB-28dB is excellent
    • 29dB or above is outstanding (source : Wikipedia)

It is pertinent to mention here that, as overall bandwidth increases, connection Signal to Noise ratio decreases. A customer that upgrades from 1.5 to 6.0 Mbps will typically see a corresponding decrease in the Signal to Noise ratio. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

(Source: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_margin)

  • Cable joints weaken the signal and results in weak DSL speed and weak SNR margins. It is unlikely that you will enjoy a good DSL connection if two or more than two extensions are fixed on one telephone line. Try to cut off extensions in this regard.
  • A new cable from DP is recommended if a telephone connection has more than one joint. It will enhance the signal strength and SNR margins.
  • Local lineman can instantly troubleshoot and get you out of the fiasco. Go for this simple solution instead of lodging a complaint on help line (1218) and waiting for the things to be done. However lineman should be taken good care of as they fully realize their importance and may show attitude every now and then. They may be extremely helpful to you the moment you acknowledged their importance and exchange a few pleasantries.
  • If you got into DSL bus without any signal strength problem, then installation is half solved. Now after DSL installation check SNR margins on modem, router, and wireless router any medium device that you may be using at that for DSL. (Your ISP’s installation guys can help you in checking these values)
  • When you are done, go to the site www.speedtest.net and check download and upload speed from server nearby your location. If it shows worthy bandwidth, there you are indulging in high speed broadband connection!
  • DSL connection gives you an opportunity to bifurcate your connections as per your requirement. In simple words you may adjust connection as per your domestic needs. For example you can limit download speed to 50 or 60 kbps and remaining may be dedicated for audio / video online streaming and browsing choices. The usual downloading speed you may get on 1Mbps DSL connection is in range of 70 kbps to 135 kbps (variable) depend on the bandwidth channel and downloading server.
  • Google for DSL speed statistics software, this will give you complete trend of your DSL speed variations and even could make you able to decide the best time of downloading on unlimited connections especially.
  • Checking of Best Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) for DSL connection is always beneficial for users. Ask your installation team for checking the same, if possible.
  • Enhancing DSL speed depends on number of factors like TCP receive window size, Maximum Segment Size (MSS), Time to Live (TTL) etc. One may go for these factors but at one's own risk.

So the gist of the matter is that DSL is fast acquiring the status of indispensability in our daily lives. Although technology driven people are already aware of its many facets, it is high time common people bridge the information gap and familiarize with this technology as the speed is much higher than a regular modem while using DSL connection.

Are You Prepared for Citizen Journalism?

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 10:54 PM PDT

Are You Prepared for Citizen Journalism? is a post from: ProPakistani

A new venture of citizen journalism is coming to life soon. Its called Citizens Eye by the team. The salient features of the website are still not known since the site is in the process of launching. The phenomenon is already established in North America, Europe and parts of Asia but it will be quite an experience for Pakistanis.

The admin of the site has posed some tempting questions to attract the general public like

"Do you want to be a Citizen Journalist?" or "Do you want to cover events and news from your area or city?"

Citizens may contribute through photos, videos, podcasts, articles, news reports, interviews and event reports etc and based upon performance, they may be designated as representative of the city or a particular community.

Citizen Journalism came to surface in Pakistan when lawyers' movement was in full swing. It will not be wrong to say it in fact added fuel to the fire as people witnessing or attending large rallies started sending short video clips and interesting photos to various TV channels but citizen journalism looks a bit haphazard as it is still evolving in Pakistan.

This field now requires some guidelines, ethics and restrictions in order to grow consistently. People report in bits and pieces and do not give a clear picture of the issue involved like he/she may report students who travel on the roof of coaches but will not incorporate the views offered by Transport authority or reaction of parents that how concerned they are when they see their children traveling like this.

New comers should also be told how best to avoid yellow journalism.

These are changing times and the phenomenon is sure to spread like jungle fire but this useful tool should not be abused by a few clever people for their own vested interest; if used properly, it will help in improving the living conditions and making Pakistan a corruption free society.

Another question remains un-answered yet, on how to incentivize  the citizen journalists.SeeNReport had manage to create some buzz, but the problem remains the same, how to attract people to post news on such websites? who are more comfortable with sharing happenings on their Twitter Feeds instead of third party and non-incentivizing websites?

iPhone 4 Knocks, Are We Ready?

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 10:43 PM PDT

iPhone 4 Knocks, Are We Ready? is a post from: ProPakistani

This is a Guest Post by Zaib Ali

Black and white iPhone 4 iPhone 4 Knocks, Are We Ready?

Finally Apple announced its best iPhone ever i.e the iPhone 4 at WWDC10. It may not be a surprise for you to know that apple has already beaten Microsoft in terms of revenue, quite recently, as most of its products hitting the market these days are phone based.

Anyways coming back to iPhone 4, it is a huge phone that ideally speaking, all of us would love to get hold of instantly but the point is, will we be able to utilize the device fully since Pakistan has still not embraced 3G Technology.

While many countries around the world have either adopted the technology or they are in the process of doing so including Bangladesh (surprising, isn't it!). iPhone 4 that is said to be a bandwidth hungry device while supporting tons tons of application including HD playback, one may wonder how will it perform with GPRS or EDGE.

Now look at features of new iPhone 4 and then I will let you know its troubling features for us

  • Glass front and back
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • 720p HD video recording
  • 960 x 640 resolution with 800:1 contrast ratio (4 times better than the previous iPhones)
  • Gyroscope (3-axis)
  • Gyro + accelerometer provide 6-axis motion sensing
  • Rotation about gravity
  • Apple A4 chip
  • 32 GB of Storage
  • Dual mic suppression
  • 802.11n WiFi
  • 300 hours of standby battery time (3G talk time: 7 hours, 3G web browsing: 6 hours, WiFi browsing: 10 hours, Video playback: 10 hours, Music playback: 40 hours)
  • 3.5-inch screen
  • 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS
  • 3.5 inch mm headset jack
  • Front facing cam for video conferencing (Through WiFi)
  • Micro SIM tray

Micro Sim tray needs a micro SIM to be inserted in it and micro SIM is something totally new for people and technology in Pakistan.

Tiny card that holds your contact info and account information that you find in your GSM handset is a 15 x 25 mm plastic card whereas the new Micro SIM (also known as a 3FF SIM) is a diminutive 12 x 15mm, about 52% smaller.

This will be a litmus test for telecom operators to come up to the challenge of iPhone 4.

Telecom operators will have to invest in this technology. They should give a solution to this problem as iPhone is one of the most popular phones in Pakistan and iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS are glaring examples in this regard

Or if you are extremely eager to have this phone and think that your carrier is not going to provide you with a micro SIM card then here’s what you can do, you can make one for yourself by cutting the large one to fit in your iPhone 4!! (Pakistanis you know are very witty).

Sim cut iPhone 4 Knocks, Are We Ready?

On other hands, people of the country are already voicing that why cellular companies are not bringing in iPhone officially. Else these phones are sold at 3 times’ price in the market.

Retailers in Pakistan are estimating Rs. 70,000 as opening price of iPhone 4G in Pakistan or even higher. So the point is why cellular companies are not thinking about giving out iPhone like they do in other countries.

An iPhone enthusiast went emotional and tweeted following:

iPhone Demand Pakistan iPhone 4 Knocks, Are We Ready?
