Posted: 30 Aug 2010 11:31 PM PDT The PS3/PS2 and the PSP are distinctly different things, not just in appearance but also in how you play games on them. Try as developers might, some franchises that are popular on a home console will just not work on Sony’s handheld, because most gaming experiences that are successful when the player is sitting on the couch staring at a big TV don’t work when they are transplanted to PSP. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker comes to mind immediately; while that game may have worked in terms of gameplay, the truth of the matter is that the full Metal Gear Solid experience, as that game was intended to be, is far more annoying when you’re playing it on this awkward device you have to hold up to your face for long periods of time as you watch stupidly melodramatic cutscenes. The best PSP games are the ones that are built to be played in shorter bursts, like when you sit on the porch and have a cigarette or when you plant yourself on the toilet. And this brings me to Valkyria Chronicles, a game I never really enjoyed. It was poorly written in the way you expect a lot of Japanese games to be, but that wasn’t my problem. My problem is that when I sit down to game, I do so with the intent to play for several hours. But for whatever reason, this game, as it jarringly went back an forth between turn-based tactical situations and lengthy button-prompt cutscenes, didn’t flow for me, and I couldn’t get into it, even if I really enjoyed the battles themselves; the structure and pace were off enough that I couldn’t enjoy myself. But Valkyria Chronicles II is on the PSP. For the first few hours, because the game starts sooooooooo slowly and the battles are full of text popping up to tell you how to play the game, I was again bored out of my mind, and it certainly didn’t help that I found all the characters in this title far more annoying than those of the first game. But once all the tutorials are out of the way, the game finds a nice rhythm appropriate to the system it inhabits. Not a lot has changed in this round of Valkyria Chronicles. The watercolor art style has been preserved, and, honestly, it looks just as good on the small screen as it did on my HDTV. It’s still the RPG class-based turn-based tactical combat we loved the first time around, though there are a few tweeks: there’s a new class, and the RPG-style progression now allows for branching, and so characters are no longer pigeon-holed into one class. For those not familiar with the idea, here’s the deal: Like any traditional RPG, you’ve got a group of folks who specialize in something, like shooting or defending or healing. Unlike a traditional RPG, the combat is all from the third-person perspective, and you take turns moving each character around the battle map doing whatever that character is supposed to do. Think of it as living in the space between Final Fantasy (not XIII) and the first Mass Effect. As before, the gameplay can be quite addictive, or at least it is when it gets challenging. Sadly, it isn’t challenging for many an hour, but once you beef up your dudes and ladies and move far enough through the game, you’ll find quite the enthralling experience as you face a few different, interesting mission types, like escort missions. So, yeah, the story. The first game was about fake Poland or whatever (Gallia) being caught in the middle of a big war between the something-or-other-Empire and the something-or-other-Alliance. And you and your bros fought off whichever one of those was the bad guys. This time around, it’s two years later, and it’s still about fake Poland or whatever, except this time there’s a bunch of local racists rebelling because some of the Queen’s ancestors had black hair. Also, it’s like Harry Potter, because the whole game revolves around a bunch of kids at a military academy who fight the racists. And that’s all I have to say about that, because the story is crap. I don’t know how much I like this game. Yea, I like the battles, and I like methodically progressing my characters. I like those things a lot. But I don’t like the boring story or how horribly annoying all the characters are. Now, if players weren’t going to spend half their time with the game on things that aren’t combat and RPG stuff, I might could let all that lame-o bullpucky slide. But players will, and so I can’t. P.S. There is adhoc co-op and competitive multiplayer, but I didn’t get to try it since I’m probably the only person in the state of Alabama to have a review copy. I’m told there is a way to take it online through the PS3, but I only leearned that today and was unable to try it out. P.P.S. I enjoyed the game most when I was drunk, so take that for what it’s worth. Pros: Cons:

A variety of different camera perspectives seems a sop to different cadres of gamers. Posted: 30 Aug 2010 12:27 PM PDT Halo: Reach is slated as the farewell to the Halo franchise, which is bittersweet news for gamers the world over. Featuring augmented single-use abilities, new game modes, and customizable loadouts, Reach (like all Halo games) is centered squarely on multiplayer, a fact that will come as no surprise to those who participated feverishly in the Beta. This is not to say that the single-player campaign has gotten short shrift, however. The game’s plot is centered on a rich and tragic epoch in the series’ history, and countless hours have been expended revamping the graphics and redesigning key elements. Some people will still see it as a formality, however — a sort of amuse bouche for the frag-fest to come — and it’s with them in mind that we offer this walkthrough, which will enable gamers to jet through the singleplayer missions with stunning speed. Check back soon for the first installments. |
Posted: 30 Aug 2010 10:59 AM PDT Every convention, we hear the same things from Microsoft and Sony. Microsoft harps on the staggering number of Live subscribers they have, and Sony retorts that at least their service doesn’t cost $50 a year. Somewhere in the middle, gamers cry out for better PS3 online service and cheaper 360 service. In 2010, we’re getting all that, plus a little extra. Sony’s launched a pay service that gives access to random free games, and Microsoft is actually RAISING the price of XBox Live. Yes, that’s right. If you live in the US, UK, Canada or Mexico, your subscription to live is going to get more expensive on November 1, 2010. How much more? Here’s an idea: If you’re an existing Live customer, you can renew your subscription now for a special rate of $39.99. That eases the sting a bit, but it’s going to be a big debate whether that subscription is still worth the cash when the next renewal comes up. Also, Microsoft hasn’t announced any new features accompanying this change (maybe they will later this week at PAX?), so it doesn’t look like much more than an attempt to cover increasing costs. I’ve always debated having a Gold subscription, as I felt it was a little pricey for what was delivered. Now, the debate is swinging towards becoming a Silver member. Heck, I might even invest that $50 in PlayStation Plus and see if it’s worth having. I wonder if anyone else will do the same. If you want to see how the community feels about this, I suggest checking out the comments on MajorNelson.com. |

Zombie RPG Dead State Revealed Posted: 30 Aug 2010 07:29 AM PDT We’ve heard rumors and speculation on a project called ZRPG for a while. It’s in the works at Doublebear, which is made up of veterans of Obsidian Entertainment and Troika. Now, thanks to an interview at RockPaperShotgun, we’ve got plenty more details to pass on. The new project is called Dead State, and it’s a true RPG set in a zombie apocalypse. You’re running the local safe house, a school. You’ll go outside to hunt for supplies, food and allies. Once you get back to the shelter, you’ll reinforce your defenses and improve your equipment. Think Fallout, except in Texas, and there are ZOMBIES. Zombie purists will be happy with Dead State, which will feature the classic shambling zombie. You can easily outrun one or two, but get cornered by a horde of them, and you’re likely to end up as the main course on the zombie buffet. The zombies aren’t actually the core of the game. In fact, Brian Mitsoda of Doublebear says the game, “is not about the zombies, but about how people react to a crisis and what they are willing to do to other human beings and even members of their group to stay alive or protect their own.” Remember those allies we mentioned you need to find? Well, there are other groups of survivors trying to recruit as well. Since you’re running one shelter, you’ll have the opportunity to makes alliances with some groups. However, each group you befriend will likely have enemies, and they won’t be keen on you helping out. If you get into a shootout on the street, you can expect the noise to attract the undead, making a bad situation even worse. Of course, smart positioning could lead to the zombies falling upon your enemies, making your job much easier. One of the game’s inspirations is X-Com, and the turn-based combat sounds like it will have a similar feel to the venerable franchise. Misoda mentioned that they want that same “feeling of dread” that the X-Com games evoked. “You only have line of sight to what you and your allies see. It's very easy to be in a situation where you turn the corner and there are five zombies waiting there or a case where you fail to properly sweep a bedroom and one lunges out of the walk-in closet while you're about to search the dresser. I think that's a big part of the zombie genre, that experience where your friend gets bit that one time you weren't careful,” he says. We’ll have to wait for more information on Dead State, but from what we’ve heard so far, it sounds like it could be a really interesting take on the done-to-death zombie game. For more information, you can check out the official site, or stay tuned to FileFront. |
iControlPad Turns iPhone/iPod Touch into Handheld Game System Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:48 AM PDT Not satisfied with the touch controls on your iPhone device? Well, what if you could place it in a shell and play your games like a handheld, d-pad and all? The iControlPad is a product from a small company that aims to make the interface between iPhone and gamers a bit more natural. Sure, touch controls are great for somme titles, but face it, if you’re a fan of classic arcade titles or you run emulators on your iPhone you quickly find the touch interface is a liability. While the iControlPad is still not available for purchase you can track the development progress and watch the eventual sage before Apple undoubtedly cries foul and sicks an army of lawyers upon them. The product requires a jailbroken device. Release date and price are still pending. |
AMD Kills ATI Brand, Radeon Lives On Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:33 AM PDT Well, the Nvidia vs. ATI debate is finally solved! (Kinda) AMD officially abolished the ATI name and has begun the process of remarking all its’ graphics cards with its corporate name. This move is not really a big surprise, since increasingly ATI and AMD were interchangeable titles and the GPU technology is quickly becoming hybrid CPU/GPU technology.AMd says that the cards currently on the market will continue to be branded ATI (including the Radeon 5000 series) so if you’re married tot he name you have a little while to pick up a card with the old logo intact. Starting “later this year” you can buy the re-branded Radeon and Crossfire lines at retail. The cards in the boxes will be the same quality and design though, this is merely a marketing change. |
