Sony Xperia X10 Running Android 2.1

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 03:20 PM PDT

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was among the first Android phones to hit the market with a 4-inch TFT screen, an 8MP camera and a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. However, the biggest problem with the Xperia X10 – in fact with all the Xperia Android based handsets -  is that they run on Android 1.6 (Donut). Sony Ericsson had promised that the X10 will get the Android 2.1 update sometime in Q3. With already a week and half in to September, it won't be long before Sony Ericsson starts rolling out the Éclair update across various regions of the world.

Until that X10 owners should suffice their 2.1 desire with this new video of X10 running Android 2.1 –:

As it can be seen from the video above, Sony Ericsson has replaced their older lock skin with a themed version of the original Android lock screen. The Android 2.1 update will also bring with it 720p HD recording to the X10.

Hopefully, the Android 2.1 update will also fix the nasty Wi-Fi bug which currently plagues the X10.

Asus Windows Phone 7 Based Prototype Shows Up On Video

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 12:50 PM PDT

As the launch of Windows Phone 7 comes closer more and more videos and pictures of handsets running WP7 are popping up on the Internet. Now a video of an Asus handset running on Windows Phone 7 has popped up on the Internet.

The video is 11 minutes 46 seconds long and shows the upcoming mobile OS from MS in action. I personally found the Asus handset in the video pretty sleek. The UI of the device as demonstrated in the video also looks great.

However, we have already seen some great looking WP7 running phones from different manufacturers before. It is the hardware on which this prototype WP7 phone from Asus is running which interests most of us now. It does look like from the video that this Asus phone is using an AMOLED screen. It will be interesting to see whether most of these WP7 based phone run on the ‘old-and-outdated’ Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm or a newer generation chip.

Hopefully with time more information about this WP7 handset from Asus will pop up.

Acer Liquid Metal: Another New Android Phone

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 10:05 AM PDT

Acer hasn’t seen a lot of success with its Android smartphones, but it certainly is trying hard.

Details of a soon-to-be-released smartphone by Acer, the Acer Liquid Metal, powered by the Android OS have surfaced on the internet.

The new Acer Liquid Metal seems to be a stylish new device by Acer which will run Android 2.2 Froyo. It will have a Qualcomm MSM 7230 800 MHz processor with 512 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM. It will support up to 32 GB microSD cards and will have Acer’s custom UI.

It will presumably have a 5 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash and also has a stereo FM radio with RDS. The display is a 3.6 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

It will sport the basic connectivity options – GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP. It will be officially announced soon.

TweetDeck For Android V0.9.8 Beta Released

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 09:35 AM PDT

The folks behind TweetDeck have just updated the beta version of TweetDeck for Android. This new beta update brings with it a trio of widgets and a new Add Column interface. Along with this, the beta also fixes the various bugs found in the previous beta and aims at improving the performance of the application. snap20100910_214909

The three new widgets include TweetDeck Bar, TweetDeck Column and TweetDeck post. The TweetDeck Bar widget contains shortcuts to all your columns. The TweetDeck column shows the recent tweets of the column you select. However, according to me this widget has a very odd size. It needs to be a bit bigger. The TweetDeck Post widget allows you to quickly compose and tweet new messages.

I have been using TweetDeck right from the time the first beta rolled out. The application is downright impressive with a very pleasing UI. However, it still lacks a very important feature and that is the number of tweets to load.

Here is the link to download TweetDeck Beta for Android.

Android Set To Become Second Largest Mobile OS

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 09:33 AM PDT

Google played a gamble when they decided to foray into the mobile operating system by purchasing about 5 years ago. However, 5 years down the line that gamble seems to have paid off, since reports suggest the Android will soon overtake RIM and iOS as the 2nd largest mobile in the world behind Symbian.

Android Gingerbread

According to Gartner, Android will become the No. 2 worldwide mobile operating system in 2010 and will challenge Symbian for the largest mobile OS title by 2014. Currently Symbian has the highest markets share with 46.9% overall, however, that is set to drop to 40.1% in 2010.

Android on the other hand had only 3.9% market share in 2009, but that is set to leap to 17.7% in 2010 overtaking Apple’s iOS which had 14.4% share last year, is set to rise to 17.5% because of several new introductions including the and . Blackberry’s RIM to is on a downswing with 19.9% share last year and 17.5% share predicted for this year.

Android phones have definitely hit the roof since last year. More than 200,000 Android devices are sold per day, this number is bound to rise, with several mobile manufacturers adopting the Android OS for their devices.

With the introduction of and Android 3.0 aka , Google is all set to challenge the mighty Symbian who was at one point of time one of the best Mobile OS. Sadly Symbian has lost ground since then and has failed to make impressive changes to challenge the newer age mobile OS platforms.
