Day 5 of No Dining Out August

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 05:35 AM PDT

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend at a restaurant(s) of their choice!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or deposit it into your fund!
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here and the what’s for dinner posts

My progress:

We had a crazy day yesterday and my husband ended up picking us up a sub to split. $5 at Subway.

How are you doing?

Disneyland Training: Check out the parades!

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 06:15 PM PDT

This is a guest post courtesy of my friend Courtney who blogs at My DFW Mommy. She recently enjoyed her first trip to Disneyland and fell in love with the parades!

We went to Disneyland a few weeks ago and absolutely loved the Parades! They have them twice a day, at 3:30 and at 6:30.  The first day we got ready for the parade around 15 minutes before it started, and learned very quickly that getting there 30-45 early was better!  So the 2nd day we knew what to expect.  We stood on the corner of main street before you cross the lot to the castle and that was the BEST spot!  As the parade moves and it stops about three times to do a few dances.  We were right where it stopped!  Your kids can join the conga line, play instruments, and even dance with a character during the parade. You want to be right on the curb to be able to do this!  We thought the parades were the best we have EVER seen! You can take pictures of almost all of the characters thru out the parade! All of the dancers are so full of energy and excitement and it seemed to be contagious…and we left not hot and tired, but energized and inspired!

Let’s Save Some Money – Other uses for towels

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 03:30 PM PDT

Saving money….. now there’s a topic we all love. Most of you are here reading my blog because you want to save more money. We save at the grocery store and we save at the drug store. But there are lots of ways we could be saving and stretching our dollar……

This is an email I got from my reader Heidi…

In reference to your post, Let’s Save Some Money – Reusing Towels, I wanted to share another way my family saves money by using towels.

Another thing we do with towels, and have been doing for about 4 years now, is we use towels for cleaning instead of paper towels. I realized several years back we were going through paper towels at a really fast rate, and they seemed so expensive. So, we decided to purchase a 24-pack of white shop towels/hand size towels at a warehouse store 4 years ago. We have them stacked in a kitchen cabinet for easy access in the room we use them the most. We use them to clean counters, clean spills and messes, I use them to clean window sills and floors, and pretty much anything we’d use a paper towel for. Then, when it’s dirty or grimy (they last much longer than a paper towel so we can store it under the sink for a few days to continue using), we toss them in with whatever load of wash is getting done, fold and return to the cabinet. We have saved a fortune in paper towels, and feel better that we have eliminated waste and “gone green” in the process.
