Invest in real estate? No way. How about sandwiches in a can?

Posted: 08 Jul 2010 11:36 AM PDT

Making an investment in real estate isn’t what it used to be. Remember that old saying, “the value will only go up?” Well, we all know now that it was a bunch of bunk and what goes up must come down, way down.

So one cunning money manager decided to put the money of his investors elsewhere … in the promising new canned sandwich market. But before you pop open the top and enjoy a fresh pb&j, I have to tell you that this story doesn’t have a happy ending.

Travis L. Wright, a Utah-based money manager wasn’t so forthcoming about his company’s investment plans. According to a federal lawsuit brought against him by the SEC last week, Wright promised 175 trusting investors that he would invest some $145 million of their money in real estate. Instead, he turned to Candwich, and other out-of the-box ventures such as companies that sell watches online, and another that prints greetings on rose petals. Oh, and Wright also used some of the money to fund his “lavish lifestyle.”

Wright is facing fraud charges and his companies, Waterford Loan Fund LLC and Waterford Funding LLC are going through bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Mark One, the maker of Candwiches, is hoping to move forward with production of the ready-to-eat vending machine treats with a long shelf life sometime this year. See, not everyone looses when investment deals go wrong.

Airline agents utilize mobile devices for its customers

Posted: 08 Jul 2010 07:02 AM PDT

Long lines at airports are a likely sight for many travelers nowadays. The airline industry is looking to utilize mobile devices even more when it comes to interacting with passengers. While these devices already let airline agents check flights and issue bag tags and boarding passes, they will soon be equipped to receive payments from passengers.

The premise behind these mobile tools is to help cut down on the lengthy lines that continue to frustratingly form at airports. However, these devices will now offer a convenient means to accept payment from passengers for seat upgrades, food or movies before even boarding the plane. American Airlines and Delta are two U.S. carriers that plan to expand upon their current mobile device capabilities.

Some airlines will make it that much easier for passengers to spend money. Once you've dealt with the typical airport headaches, isn't it nice to know that these mobile devices will allow you to instantly purchase additional services?

Sometime this year, Delta intends to add more functions to its mobile devices, one of which would be the ability to handle credit card transactions for purchases and payments. The airline would also like its machines to be able to check in passengers with bags to check, rebook flights, and swipe passports for international travelers.

Even with the usage of these mobile devices, I don't know if the wait times or lines at airports will significantly decrease. Essentially these devices are designed to provide convenience for travelers. But, I think it still remains to be seen if these mobile devices have any measurable impact on time savings or the customer experience.
