Mark Niver, 60, of Phoenix was competing in the Top Alcohol dragster class in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing series, the top feeder circuit for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing series.
The NHRA says it's investigating Sunday's accident and is extending its sympathies to Niver's family. A spokesman for the association declined comment when asked for more information about what happened, saying the investigation had just started.
Niver's death is the second in a month at an NHRA event. Neal Parker, 58, from Millville, N.J., died of head injuries after crashing during a qualifying round at the NHRA SuperNationals in June.
Formula One: Mark Webber won his third Formula One race of the season, cruising to victory in the British Grand Prix after overtaking Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel on the opening lap. Points leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren finished second, 1.36 seconds behind Webber.

Carl Edwards made a charge in the closing laps, cutting Reutimann's lead to less than a second, but he couldn't get close enough and finished second. Gordon was third, followed by Clint Bowyer and Jamie McMurray. It was a rough night for several strong Chase contenders -- notably Jimmie Johnson, who dominated the first half of the race but spun out and later scraped the wall to finish 25th.
