Hacker’s Group ‘Pakbugs’ Got Arrested Today Posted: 08 Jul 2010 04:03 AM PDT Hacker’s Group ‘Pakbugs’ Got Arrested Today is a post from: ProPakistani Government officials today announced that they had traced a gang of hackers and arrested at least five suspects involved in defacing thousands of domestic and international websites and online fraud. The “internationally-known hackers” have been picked up in an operation spanning the country over the past few weeks, reported AFP, citing Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) senior officer Mian Idrees. “We have unearthed notorious hackers? group ‘Pakbugs‘ and arrested five members of this group,” said the official. The FIA said in a statement the group was involved in hacking or defacing thousands of websites belonging to government, non-government and international organisations. “Pakbugs” founder Jawad Ehsan, alias Humza, remains at large and is believed to be based in Saudi Arabia, the statement said. But it said co-founder Hassan Khan has been detained in the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar, along with other members in Lahore, Bannu and Rawalpindi. Idrees ruled out the hackers’ involvement in terrorism and said the men had been charged only with electronic crimes. Pakistan, fighting terrorism and high-tech offences, in 2008 declared cyber-terrorism a capital crime, while electronic fraud is punishable by a prison term of seven to ten years. Voice Services in DHA Suffer as Monopoly of Wateen go Un-checked Posted: 08 Jul 2010 03:53 AM PDT Voice Services in DHA Suffer as Monopoly of Wateen go Un-checked is a post from: ProPakistani Wateen Telecom, as a result of some ‘exclusive deal' enjoys the monopoly of voice services for DHA Lahore Phase 5. The monopoly came to fore following an agreement which Wateen struck with DHA Lahore. As per agreement DHA Lahore will prevent other land-line voice service providers such as PTCL to offer its services in DHA Phase 5. It is worthy to mention here that DHA Phase 5 covered by Wateen makes up 25 percent of DHA Lahore. People however question the uselessness of the agreement because as per its record, the services offered by Wateen have not always been very reliable. Locals of the area cite example of a recent incident in which Wateen’s server is down since Tuesday – July 6, 2010 and therefore all voice line subscribers in Phase 5, DHA Lahore are unable to avail the facility. A large number of people are coming forward to register its protest over the decision and cancel the agreement with Wateen. They are of the view that instead of Wateen, PTCL should be invited to do the job and provide landline phone services. Wateen maintains through its helpline it is trying to fix the problem as soon as possible. DHA Lahore said it cannot do anything because of this exclusive agreement. CCP when approached elaborated it was the explicit violation of CCP laws, however, as per CCP laws some consumer will have to initiate the process by registering a complaint and then a legal action may be followed. Local residents have repeatedly complained to PTA but it looks as if its officials have turned deaf ears to the genuine complaints of the victims. Related posts:

Posted: 08 Jul 2010 01:11 AM PDT Qubee Gets Pricy is a post from: ProPakistani By Sarwat B. Khan Just one month after the official launch of the WiMAX product, Qubee has started charging initial cost or what they call (non-refundable) installation charges – however, tariff plans remain the same. These charges are other than security charges. Earlier Qubee was offering Zero charges for installation, which are now Rs. 500 for Modem and Rs. 1,500 for Wi-Fi device. These prices can be verified from Qubee’s helpline, as they are yet to be updated on official website. With a very few customer base, and limited bandwidth, Qubee still have a way to go to survive in the wireless broadband market and co-exist with giants like Wateen. Given that Qubee is still to launch its services in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore, this hike in pricing is going to give tough time to its sales team. To give the picture, here is a comparative analysis of Qubee offerings versus Wateen's: Augere needs to do serious thinking to survive in this market. Poor taglines like "Insomnia is in fashion" on billboards all over the places cannot save them in competitive market. Related posts:

ICT R&D Fund Directors Fired for Rejecting Khosa’s Brother-In-Law Posted: 08 Jul 2010 12:06 AM PDT ICT R&D Fund Directors Fired for Rejecting Khosa’s Brother-In-Law is a post from: ProPakistani Ongoing difference between ICT R&D Fund directors and Mr. Latif Khan Khosa reached its highest level when six out of 12 directors were shown the door for not complying with Minister's urge of appointing Mr. Azhar Manzoor as the ICT R&D Fund Chairman, reported Sama TV. Mr. Manzoor is the brother-in-law of Prime Minister's Adviser on Information Technology Latif Khosa. According to a notification issued by the Information Technology Ministry 6 were terminated with immediate effect. Named include:
Sources say the slot of the chairman of ICTR&D Fund was lying vacant, which Latif Khosa tried to fill, recommending his brother in-law for this position. HRGC (Human Resource Governance Committee) received applications from multiple candidates including the brother-in-law of Mr. Khosa, as reported by sources in fund. Mr. Manzoor had presented his MBA degree without mentioning the institute. On inquiry, it was found that he had graduated from some "Canadian Management Institute", which actually was a fake and non-existent university, as HEC has said that it does not recognize this institute; in fact it does not exist at all, told us sources familiar with situation. On this, out of 12, six directors refused to approve Azhar Manzoor’s name as the Chairman of ICTR&DF, after which they were fired with immediate effect. We were unable to collect Minister’s viewpoint on the issue. It merits mentioning here that ICT R&D Fund is run by a set amount of revenue share offered by telecom companies. It offers funding to local universities and firms for research and development projects. Related posts:

130 Pakistani Websites Got Hacked Posted: 07 Jul 2010 10:34 PM PDT 130 Pakistani Websites Got Hacked is a post from: ProPakistani In an attack launched by Pakistani rivals, some 130 Pakistani websites were successfully accessed by a group called "ICA". Reportedly this hack was launched yesterday when one server hosted at Brain Net premises (203.128.6.133) got compromised by alleged hackers. When tried to contact Brain Net at numbers given on its website, but phone said "Ap ka Matlooba Number Tabdeel Ho giya hay" Hackers didn't deface these websites, instead just inserted one file “ICA.html” into root folders, just to show that security level of sever was not up to the mark. There was no major website in the list – while most of the websites belong to local colleges, Universities and businesses. List of hacked website can be seen here We are yet to determine type and size of exploit that was used to root the server. This is one of many hacking activities reported in past few months, which means it is extremely important for local hosting companies to realize the importance of web server security. These companies are charging nominal prices (less than Rs. 1,000) for yearly hosting plans and don't bother at all for securing customers' assets. Update: In response to Indian hack attack, a Group named URDUHACK has defaced cyber crime department India Department of CID. Link:http://www.cybercellmumbai.com/ Related posts:

EVO isn’t Available in Sargodha, Unlike Claimed by PTCL Posted: 07 Jul 2010 09:52 PM PDT EVO isn't Available in Sargodha, Unlike Claimed by PTCL is a post from: ProPakistani PTCL in a statement, earlier this week, claimed that it has taken EVO services to more than 100 cities and towns; however, it turned out to be an exaggerated claim or call it falsified one – as service is yet to hit many destinations including Sargodha. When we checked our local sources in Sargodha, they confirmed that EVO isn't available in the city. PTCL Exchanges confirmed us the same. When contacted to find out official viewpoint on this, PTCL said "It is available in pockets and under optimization /testing, will be available in next two days". One may wonder what does this pocket availability mean to a common user? It would be interesting to find out PTCL's targets and goals that it wanted to achieve by announcing a service (in mainstream media) ahead of its availability. Here is EVO ad published in today’s newspaper. Related posts:
