MySpace Google Agreement up for Renewal

Posted: 06 Jul 2010 09:47 PM PDT

It is believed News Corporation is in discussions with Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo about replacing MySpace's search engine advertising agreement.

Google has the current agreement which is expected to expire in August. The agreement is $300 million/ year in revenue for MySpace and it very unlikely they will get anywhere near this figure going forward.

MySpace is a great site, but I’m certainly not liking anything they do with it lately. Possibly charging to use the Music section (at least, that’s what it sounds like) would be completely ridiculous and would likely kill off what’s left of the site.

Ever since DeWolfe and Tom left, the site has been plagued with all of these advertisements and layout changes. They’ll never reach the level Facebook is on unless they go back to their roots and revert the site to what made it great, but I don’t see this happening as it seems to be all about the money these days.

MySpace was originally purchased by News Corporation in 2005 for $580 million USD in cash and was overtaken in 2008 by Facebook as the number 1 social networking site in the world.

New Geolocation mobile app launched, Loopt

Posted: 06 Jul 2010 07:46 PM PDT

A new social Geolocation mobile app has launched – Loopt.

Similar to Gowalla and Foursquare, Loopt is more social in that it lets you chat and interact with users around you.

Currently the app is available on the iPhone.

To download the App goto: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/loopt/id281952554

The app is also available on the iPad and is called Loopt Pulse. The company has also released an application for the BlackBerry platform.

Loopt says the service is not for outside the US at the moment however there are alot of international users but they may not get the full list of app features.

The service allows you to create and send Facebook events through the application.

The app also has the ability to turn on background location sharing so your location is shared 24/7 via the multitasking feature in iOS4.

You can customize who you want to share your location with (if decide to indeed share it), how often your location is updated and viewed. Another feature of background location is that you can get alerts if people you know whom are sharing their info with you.

The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1 or later. The app works fine on iOS4 aswell.

The app also allows you to download a KML file, which was developed for Google Earth and includes information on their location stops over the last 30 days. This will allows users to upload their KML file to a map – good for photographers and people on holidays.

It will be interesting to see if Foursquare of Gowalla decide to implement some of these more social features. A big updated is expect from Foursquare in version 2.0.

Loopt is based in Mountain View, California, USA and was created in 2005, however their mobile applications on the Apple platform is relatively new. You are able to integrate your Loopt profile with accounts on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The company has received several rounds of funding from Venture Capitalists.

Firefox 4 Beta 1 Released

Posted: 06 Jul 2010 05:24 PM PDT

Mozilla has now released the first beta for their new browser, Firefox 4.

Firefox is the 2nd most popular browser in the world with around 25% market share. This is one of several betas no doubt going to be released for Firefox 4.

To download the new beta goto: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/

Firefox 4 is a major upgrade from its previous versions including a redesign of the user interface, enhanced HTML5 support, hardware-accelerated HD video, WebSockets and advanced add-on support via Jetpack.

As this is an early beta expect crashes and broken functionality from time to time. I wouldn’t upgrade just yet if you are working and cannot afford disruptions like that.

Mozilla really needs Firefox 4 to be a winner as Google Chrome has been stealing browser marketshare from Firefox over the past couple months.

If you download the beta release let us know what you think of the functionality.

Just recently Opera Software released a new version of their browser, Opera 10.68.
