Smart Money 2010 Best Online Brokers - Bargaineering |
Smart Money 2010 Best Online Brokers Posted: 29 Jun 2010 09:06 AM PDT Every year, Smart Money takes an in-depth look at online brokers, from their trading platform to their customer service, and rates them based on their performance. They open up accounts and make trades, they call up customer service and pore through the reviews, and they share all of their experiences with you – the good, the bad, and the ugly. One thing that does surprise me is how little the list changes each year. For yet another year, the top five are the same, though their order has changed a little, and the back of the list sees the same faces. You would think that these brokers would look at these problem spots and at least make some steps to address them. Best Online Discount BrokersWho are the top discount brokers according to Smart Money? The top ten (of seventeen) are (list):
The top five this year are the same top five as last year (2009 Smart Money Broker rankings) with a few shifts. E*Trade lost the top spot to Fidelity while TD Ameritrade shot ahead two spots to take third. It’s interesting to note that in the top five, only TradeKing charges less than $5 a trade. Individual Awards
Of the five brokers, I’ve used three (E*Trade, TD Ameritrade, and TradeKing) and have had great experiences at all three. I currently use TradeKing because of their low commissions and great customer service. I haven’t used Just2Trade but with a 9th place finish and $2.50 commissions, I’d give them serious consideration if I traded stocks more often. Zecco, often lauded by many a personal finance blogger because of their low/free commissions, appears to have made a concerted effort to improve its services. Last year they were 15th out of 16. This year they climbed a few rungs up to 12th, putting it ahead of some discount veterans like Sharebuilder and Banc of America. Which broker do you use and do you think they were fairly treated by the Smart Money research team?

How to Unclog a Drain the Green Natural Way Posted: 29 Jun 2010 04:40 AM PDT When I first started looking at green ways to unclog a drain, I didn’t have a green motive. It was around ten o’clock at night, I was brushing my teeth and noticing the sink wasn’t draining nearly as fast as it should’ve, and I wasn’t about to go out to the store to buy some batch of chemicals to clear the drain. So I sought an answer online, hoping that a green solution could made from ingredients we already had in the house. The internet came through. So not only is this recipe “green,” it’s very cheap, comprised entirely of harmless products you probably already have (I did anyway), and saves you a trip to the store for caustic drain cleaner. As much as Drano would love you to believe their product is the only thing on the planet capable of cleaning out your clogged drains, it’s not. Homemade Green Drain Unclogger & CleanerThis is so simple you’ll slap your forehead for not thinking about this on your own.
This works best for full blockages because the CO forces the block out of the way. In cases where you only have a little blockage, it’s less effective since the bubbles will go to the point of least resistance. The places that do bubble will be very clean though. This is how my wife gets tea stains out of her stainless steel travel mugs. If you have a particular vexing clog that this doesn’t fix, you’ll have to go to the store and get a sink drain snake. You can get gimmicky products like Turbo Snake but the idea is the same, you go down the sink, try to grab the clog, and pull it up. It’s green because it doesn’t use any chemicals, it’s a completely mechanical process. Finally, regular maintenance and cleaning will help prevent clogs in the first place. Every week or two, pour a pitcher of boiling hot water down the drain to give it a good flush. You can also use the baking soda and vinegar trick to clean the gunk out as well, remember to flush with boiling hot water. Green and clean! (Photo: aprillynn77)
