Guest Post: It’s raining coupons….and you don’t have a binder?

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 11:45 AM PDT

This is a guest post by my friend Patti who I admit is soooooo much more organized than I am!

Hi, my name is Patti Miller and I am in no way a professional blogger, coupon master, or writer. But what I am is an OCD wife of a Marine and a mother who loves to spend her husband's money WISELY!!

I remember growing up and my mom always had a messy clutch of coupons and I could have cared less why. When I became an adult (if I am one yet) I started tearing coupons out of the paper and shoving them in an envelope with no plan in site once I got to the store. Finally one day, my neat freak husband said why don't you organize those things. So I went out and bought my first organizer which looking back 20 years really wasn't worth the time it took to organize the coupons. So, 20 years later, I have found a system that anyone can follow and modify to fit your own situation. It keeps me organized, keeps my husband happy because everything is neat and orderly and it SAVES us a TON OF MONEY.

About 4 months ago I really got into couponing heavily. I had a day planner crammed with the paper things and every time I went to the store they fell all over the place. So I purchased a binder and some baseball card sheets at Walmart for about $10. I took my new toys home and until I had every coupon filed I did not log on to the internet and read blogs or print coupons and I did not open the newspaper. WHY? You ask? Because it will only burden you and overwhelm you and you will end up not being able to serve dinner on the dining room table or sit on the couch to watch tv. Organize your binder the best way that fits you, but mine is store cards in one of the zip pockets, scissors in another zip pocket, pen in another, store coupon policies in the front, Walmart All You magazines in the pocket fold area inside of binder, section one is food items broken down into categories, meats, frozen, can, desserts, fruit, veggies, drinks, baby food, breads, baking, etc. Then in the middle I put Target coupons and clip coupons that can pair up with the Target coupon and attach them together in the pockets. Behind that section I have toiletries; shampoo and conditioner, bath wash, deodorant, dental, etc. In the final section I put ECB's and Catalina's from CVS and Walgreen's. YOU SHOULD NOT BE DOING ANYTHING WITH COUPONING UNTIL THIS BINDER IS STORE READY!!!

DON'T GO SHOPPING YET…Get a feel for your own plan. Here is mine. My binder is ready. Now I can start fresh on reading blogs each day. There are thousands of them out there and you will drive yourself nuts trying to read them all. I have the following that I check everyday. I check out someone who focuses on CVS, Target, Walmart, and three that cover it all. I read each blog first, most have same info on them. I jot down who has something on their blog that I want to go back to, mostly for coupon printing. After all blogs have been read, I go back and print coupons from the ones I jotted down prior. I do this once in the morning and once in the evening. Make sure you also subscribe to these blogs and you will receive emails daily with all their deals in case you can't go online for some reason that day. Now, you have printed all these coupons and can't remember why, and I can fix that. I have a very large kitchen and I have one area that I use for my shopping area. I have my ongoing grocery list and only purchase items on it that are on sale. Next to the list is where I keep my weekly sale papers lined up like little soldiers. As I print a coupon I put it on top of that weeks store ad. My grocery ads come on Wednesday's. So Wednesday afternoon I scan the ad, lay it on the counter and start my coupon hunt from my binder. By the time I do this I have already checked out that days blogs and the deals are already listed on these blogs and I most likely have printed the coupons or pulled them from the binder. I do this for Randalls, HEB and Kroger. I also have the past Sundays CVS and Walgreen's ads in case I find a deal I may have missed on the prior Sunday. If I did miss something I will purchase it on Saturday evening while I am at the store also doing the early Sunday deals. In addition to that I have a piece of paper marked CVS and Walgreens where I place coupons for the upcoming Sunday's deals which you can find a week in advance online. I live in Houston and it is HOT. So I try to shop in the evening and hit all three grocery stores in one night. I use to hit three grocery stores and 2 drug stores in one weekend and found it took longer because of the crowds and because of that it took time away from my family. So now I break it down. I shop drug stores late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Most drug stores start their Sunday sales on Saturday evening.

At this point you shouldn't have any unattended coupons lingering around the house like dust. They should be in your binder or on the counter waiting to go to the store along with the ad.

After you go shopping, don't toss the ads. Keep them until they expire. Put away groceries first and then file any coupons you didn't use immediately. Put receipts in one place in case a rebate pops up. I keep mine in an aluminum pan in one of my pantries.

I purchase the ALL YOU at Walmart and I read it immediately, and then cut out the coupons. I get the Sunday paper and immediately pull the ads I shop (Target, CVS, Walgreen's) scan them, look for coupons in binder, and place them on counter. Usually by the time I get the ads my coupons are ready because I have been collecting them all week as I stated prior. I clip the current coupons and immediately file them. DON'T PROCRASINATE!!! This gets you in trouble, leads to messes and frustration.

Online coupon sites are nice but take a lot of time. I only go to them once a week to do all my printing unless a blog states that there is a deal I just can't refuse. But when I do go online I usually only go to a few, like blogs you can hit too many and it can get overwhelming. I usually do coupons.com, target.com, Pillsbury.com shortcuts.com smartsource.com and redplum.com.

My weekly plan looks something like this: some days you won't print at all

Monday-check blogs, print from blogs

Tuesday-check blogs, print from blogs

Wednesday-check blogs, print from blogs, scan grocery ads, shop grocery stores/Walmart

Thursday-check blogs, print from blogs, print from online sources, prepare for drugstores

Friday-check blogs, print from blogs

Saturday-check blogs, print from blogs, shop drugstores in evening

Sunday-check blogs, print from blogs, pull ads and coupons from paper-file,shop target

**I always do the 4 and 5 A DAY deals on couponingtodisney

**Remember if you shop drugstores on Saturday evening you will be doing it without the sale ad unless you get the early edition of the Sunday paper on Saturday. So make sure that you write down everything you are going for and the deal, because most times the shelves won't be marked yet and you will need to know exactly what you are shopping for and what the prices are.

**Only go to each of your stores once a week otherwise you are wasting gas and not really saving in the end. Some weeks you won't shop at all your stores and that is ok. You don't have to hit all your stores every week. You aren't missing anything.

**The key is to not get overwhelmed. Don't shop everyday, don't print everyday, keep your coupons filed, and keep ads on counter so all you have to do each day is add coupons to the correct pile so you are ready for shopping day.

**If a store is out of something ask for a rain check

**Binder is best way to store, find, and carry your coupons. If they are tossed in a drawer you will never find what you need without digging through a ton of ads and that is time consuming. Plus if they are in a drawer they aren't with you at the store when that once in lifetime deal is going on and you are caught without a coupon. And a file folder is too awkward to be digging in while shopping. Although I carry my binder every where I go, I usually have already pulled everything out of it I need before I leave home, but still take it with you in case you find something on sale that no one had mentioned online. Then remember to notify your favorite blog (couponingtodisney) so she can post it for others.

Day 9 recap

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 10:30 AM PDT

On the 9th day of the trip, we decided to go to Hollywood Studios. Lee Dewyze (The American Idol) was going to be in a parade in front of the American Idol experience and we thought it would be fun.

We got to Hollywood Studios just after it had opened (it was an early magic hour day) and Jason rushed to get us Fastpasses. The kids and I took our time walking back to the Muppets 3D show and Jason met us there just as we were arriving. We watched the show with about 5 other people (I really don’t know why this is an early magic hour attraction, but it was alright) and the kids enjoyed it. We then went to wait on Chip and Dale to come out at 9 am. By the time 9:15 am rolled around, we decided they weren’t coming. This was a frustrating part of the trip because we asked 2 cast members if the characters were still greeting in front of the hat (even though the parade was going on at 10 am) and they said yes. Oh well.

The kids and I went to meet Buzz and Woody while Jason went to see the American Idol parade. The times guide said that they begin meeting at 9:30 am, but the sign said 10 am. We decided to wait it out and sure enough, it was 9:30. It only took us about 5 minutes wait to meet these cool characters!

After that, we walked over to meet Lightning McQueen and Mater. They were so cute!  And then we went to the Animation Building to meet Sorcerer Mickey. That’s where we hit the jack pot! That is where all the sorcerer hat characters ended up.

Here’s who we met in 45 minutes:

Sorcerer Mickey
Minnie
Goofy
Pluto
Chip
Dale
Stitch
Pooh
Piglet
Lotso

Can you tell the kids LOVE meeting the characters?

After this, we left Hollywood Studios and headed back to the hotel to refresh.

We got to Epcot around 3 pm so we could do the Visa Meet and Greet. We had the best discussion with people while we waited our turn. We only had to wait about 10 minutes in line and it went by fast. We met Mickey, Minnie and Goofy at the meet and greet. The kids had a lot of fun but I was a little irritated at Disney. They advertise it as a private meet and greet, but they had the waiting family stand behind a rope in the same room as us. I don’t classify that as too private.

Next we went to Mexico for the BEST tasting Nachos in all the world. Make sure you don’t miss these. They are so good! We also rode Gran Fiesta Tour (which Jacob LOVED) and tried on the sombreros. Then we rushed to China to meet Mulan (waited 2 minutes) where Jacob received the THIRD kiss of the trip.

Then we ran to meet Snow White (she’s so cute!) before her meet and greet time was over. We had to wait 10 minutes to see her. Apparently she couldn’t find her lipstick.

Then we backtracked back to Norway and rode Maelstrom and stopped in China to eat dinner. While we were eating, it started to rain. So we spent some time browsing in the shops and playing with the Chinese toys. I also bought my grandmother a fan and they wrote her name on it in Chinese. (They do this for free!)

Finally the rain started to let up, so we went on to tour Germany and the United States. Finally we ended up in Japan where I let Emily pick a pearl (it’s $17). She had no idea why she was picking a slimey oyster, but was so thrilled to find it had a pearl inside.

We had just enough time to grab a spot for Illuminations. If you have never seen it, it is absolutely amazing and beautiful!

We left the park and on the way back to the hotel it started to pour. I mean POUR! Jason stopped at the curb and we rushed to get the sleeping kids out of the truck and poor Emily fell flat on her butt in a huge puddle. But at least it didn’t rain on us in the parks! For that we were grateful.

Happy anniversary to my amazing husband!

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Today is our 9th anniversary. It’s so hard to believe that we have been married 9 years! Time has flown by so incredibly fast.

I met my husband online when I was 16 years old. I didn’t talk to strangers online, but one night I was bored and decided to find someone to chat with about the country music singer LeAnn Rimes (we were both huge fans of hers). I searched through AOL profiles and he was online and so we started chatting. We hit it off and 5 months later we met in person (he lived 150 miles away). My mother always said she would go on my first date and I didn’t believe her, and sure enough…. she went on our first date. Looking back I really appreciate her doing that, but I was rather annoyed at the time.

And that night I got my very first kiss…. on the baby aisle of a grocery store. We had gone to Books a Million and decided to walk next door to the grocery store and he kissed me right there on the baby aisle! I went weak in the knees. I’m not kidding. I really did swoon.

The next summer he moved to town (just before my senior year) and we were inseparable (well as much as my mother allowed us to be. I wasn’t allowed at his house by myself, etc. We spent A LOT of time hanging out with my baby brother and sister). The month after I graduated high school we got married. We had planned on having a nice, small wedding, but my home life was too crazy at that time to even plan anything. So finally my mom told me to just elope with him.

So June 29th, 2001 we went to the courthouse and exchanged our I Do’s. And after the judge pronounced us husband and wife….the Judge gave me a bag of coupons and samples. I’m not kidding! There were samples of cleaners, dishwashing detergent and coupons for bathroom supplies, paper goods and more. It still cracks me up thinking of it.

So here we are 9 years later. 2 amazing kids and a happy life. My husband is my best friend and I am so incredibly thankful to of found him at an early age. When people wonder how I get everything done between the blog, kids, house etc. It’s because of that man. He is amazing…. he even does laundry and the dishes!

Day 29 of No Dining Out June Challenge

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 04:54 AM PDT

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining out bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend at a restaurant(s) of their choice!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habbits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or save it for a goal you are working towards (like a trip to Disney World!).
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My progress:

No out to eat for us yesterday. Mother in law made the best pork chops for dinner.

How are you doing?

Leave a comment and let me know!

Comments! Comments! Comments!

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 04:52 AM PDT

Every morning I will randomly choose 1 reader who left a comment on the blog the day before to win a $5 Amazon.com gift card. The more you comment, the more you are eligible to win!

Here are a few rules:

1.You can comment on any post on the blog to enter. It does not have to be this one. Each comment you make today counts! So the more you comment, the more you entries you get! So comment, comment, comment!
2. You must leave legitimate comments. Short comments like hi, what’s up, etc will be removed. Thank yous, your so awesome Kristin, etc… are fine. ;)
3. Every morning I will count all the comments from the day before (it’s not hard on the inside of the blog) and randomly choose 1 person to win a $5 Amazon.com gift card code. It’s totally random. The winner will have 24 hours to confirm my email and I will send them the Amazon.com code. I will personally be providing the gift card.
4. Everyone who comments is eligible to win and you can win multiple times a month!

I just wanted to tell you all how much I love and appreciate each and every one of you. You are such a blessing to my life!

Here is yesterday’s winner: xbrittneyx@
