Maine Boom Not Deployed Because it Failed Inspection?

The story of the Boom manufacturer who could not get BP or the government to use his product for weeks may have been for a legitimate reason. There is some contention on if the product passed inspection. If the material used made it all useless, you would still think BP or the government would let them know what they need in order for new product to be produced and used as quickly as it could be made. If the issue was the connector end pieces, that is something that seems as if it could be rectified quickly. What this story means is that there may have been a good reason for some delay, but there still is not a good reason why both sides are not clear on the issue and had it fixed in relatively short order.

"There were concerns with material and end connectors," LaBrec said. "BP has inspectors who visit facilities and regularly test boom. In addition to testing boom from new suppliers, boom from existing manufacturers is also tested/inspected. The Coast Guard also inspects boom that we purchase from suppliers. It is important because poorly designed boom may not work as intended."

Lapoint said the boom "not only meets" standards, "it exceeds it."

"The only issue was the end connectors," Lapoint said. So, he said, "we changed it to the universal connector, so there shouldn't be any problems at all."

But he remains frustrated. "I had two engineers go down to the Gulf. I was told it had to be the universal connector. I can't tell you the miles of boom coming in from overseas that doesn't have the universal connector." He called the pushback against his boom "hogwash.""

That is because this is supposed to be on the spill as well. There was not much to the that first press conference except for the time that had lapsed between the last one and that one. Shall we play the game of 'what if a Republican did it'? Think of the outcry if a republican even insinuated that democratic women all where skirts. Now add in that they were supposed to vote a certain way to prove their gender.

"We can now add Tennessee State Democrat legislator Janis Baird Son­tany of Nashville to the roster of abusers. Here's what she said about her GOP opponents at a Democrat Party breakfast over the weekend:


State Republican Chairman Chris Devaney today denounced as "petty and insulting" a Democratic legislator's statement about her Republican women colleagues.



"You have to lift their skirts to find out if they are women. You sure can't find out by how they vote," said Rep. Janis Baird Sontany, D-Nashville.


The remark at a Saturday Democratic breakfast was initially reported by blogger Dru Smith Fuller. Sontany acknowledged the statement when asked and described it as "a glib, off-the-cuff remark" that "was inappropriate on my part."


Sontany has issued the standard, non-apology apology "if I offended anyone.""

In the past week, the United States submitted its second request to the European Union for any specialized equipment to contain the oil now seeping onto the Gulf of Mexico's marshes and beaches, and it accepted Canada's offer of 9,842 feet of boom. The government is soliciting additional boom and skimmers from nearly two dozen countries and international organizations.

In late May, the administration accepted Mexico's offer of two skimmers and 13,779 feet of boom; a Dutch offer of three sets of Koseq sweeping arms, which attach to the sides of ships and gather oil; and eight skimming systems offered by Norway.

"As we understand what we need and identify domestic and foreign sources, we will act," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, who said the United States has received 21 aid offers from 17 countries and four international groups. "We are maintaining contact with these countries, we are grateful for the offers, and we will take them up on these offers."

But some lawmakers and outside experts are questioning whether the administration has been too slow to capitalize on these offers"
