Recent research by the UK’s Office of Fair Trading suggests as much, an indication that fraudulent ticket sellers–or touts, as they’re called–are thriving despite the government’s best efforts to stop them. The fraud is so effective that a committed tout need sell only 10 tickets per week to earn $41,300 a year, according to security firm G4S Events. The proliferation of fake tickets comes not from a lack of public awareness. Live Nation and Festival Republic, among others, have frequently reminded buyers of the vast availability of fraudulent tickets, nearly all of which are sold online via scam sites. Why the warnings aren’t being heard is anyone’s guess. The fraud usually works like this: a buyer goes online in search of a ticket and identifies a site that seemingly has one for sale. A credit card transaction occurs, and a few weeks later, no ticket arrives. When the buyer goes back to the site, it has disappeared without a trace. Buyers do have some recourse through their credit or debit card companies, if the no-show ticket was bought with such a card. But prevention has been the harder sell. One key sign of a fraudulent ticket site is the markup; two recent Paul McCartney tickets were found to have sold at $664, some 235 percent above face value. Another sign is that the tickets are advertised as “available” before they have actually been released for sale to the public. Summer is music festival time, and consumers can take advantage of a variety of resources aimed at curbing phantom ticket sales. In the UK, the BBC’s “Watchdog” program and the Just Tick It campaign have revealed high-profile rogue sites, some of which fell into bankruptcy soon after their outing. A Google search for “fake ticket awareness” additionally offers a number of likeminded sites aimed at educating buyers.
