Florida Court Overturns $521M Verdict in BDO Seidman Case, Orders New Trial

In Florida today, a state appeals court threw out the $521 million jury verdict against BDO Seidman LLP that had resulted from a dispute with Portuguese bank Banco Espirito Santo SA. The court has ordered a new trial in the case, Dow Jones Newswires reports. BDO Seidman has previously acknowledged that it does not have $521 million available as a US firm, and that paying such a judgment would break the US firm. New York Will Seek Lead Plaintiff Status in BP Securities Litigation

New York Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli (pictured) stated today that he has hired a law firm to represent the fund in a securities class action lawsuit against BP Plc. Bloomberg reports that DiNapoli,  trustee of the $132.6 billion State Common Retirement Fund, said the state fund will seek lead plaintiff status in an action stemming from the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April.

The fund, which held more than 19 million shares of BP at the time, has retained the law Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC.

David S. Krakoff (pictured) and Christopher F. Regan have joined law firm BuckleySandler as partners in its Washington, DC office. The firm annunced today that the new partners have joined its White Collar Litigation & Enforcement Practice.

Krakoff and Regan join BuckleySandler from Mayer Brown. At Mayer Brown, Krakoff was the co-leader of that firm’s White Collar Litigation Practice.
