Guest Post: How To Plant A “Non-Gardener’s” Garden

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Hi there, it’s Heather from Savvy Sister Shops again. Last year we moved to a new home in June. I always loved having a garden planted in the spring, but I thought I’d be too late. Then, I started to learn more about square foot gardens. They are so easy to set up and are a “non-gardeners” garden!
I read that instead of building garden boxes, you could use a worn out bookcase or bookshelves for your garden box. My daughter’s white bookcase broke during our move. Instead of throwing it out, we turned it into a garden box!

Just lay the bookcase on its’ back and fill with soil. The perfect recipe is 1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Vermiculite, and 1/3 Compost. All of these items may be found at garden centers at your favorite store. Mix these three together and then fill the box/bookcase. Then, plant your favorite vegetables. If you’re an amateur, start with plants already growing at the garden center.

Our favorite plants are tomatoes! We planted the tomatoes as soon as we could! We had a fantastic green tomato harvest in the fall. Here is my son with 3 of the 5 bowls we picked from our tiny garden! We let them ripen inside and then used them to make spaghetti sauce, dried tomatoes, and we even canned some whole tomatoes! Yum!

Reminder: Restaurants.com – Get a $25 gift certificate for $2

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:30 AM PDT

Restaurant.com is offering their $25 gift certificates for just $2 when you use the code SUMMER at checkout. The certificates are valid for one year but the discount price is only good until Thursday night (June 24th)!

Here are a few restaurants near Disney you might want to check out:

House of Blues located in Downtown Disney (try zip 32830) or at Disneyland (try zip 92801)
You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill.

Garden Grove located at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You can eat dinner with some of your favorite Disney characters! You must purchase at least 2 entrees (this is a buffet) and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Todd’s English bluezoo at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Shula’s Steak House at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill.

Kimons at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Keep in mind that these do not work like traditional gift cards, they are more like a 50% off coupon. Each restaurant has it’s own fine print on what you need to purchase in order to use these gift certificates. I’ve seen them where you have to spend $35 and pay 18% gratuity to use the $25 gift certificate. However, this is still a great deal and a great discount and you can print them right from your computer. An instant gift. Just make sure you read the fine print.

Check out the cute new number Disney figurines!

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 06:06 AM PDT

Disney Store has introduced a new set of numbered figurines. There is Tinker Bell for the girls and Mickey for the boys. These go from ages 1-9 and are $19.99 a piece.

Every year I give me daughter a figurine for her birthday. These would be perfect to go along with that theme. The Mickey ones are really cute because Mickey does something different for each year. My favorite is the pirates one.

Disney introduces a new handheld device for visually and hearing impaired

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:40 AM PDT

One of the many things that makes Disney so magical is how they accommodate guests with every type of disability. They have just launched a new handheld device in their parks that will aid both the visually and hearing impaired.

For the visually impaired, guests will be able to hear a detailed description of outdoor areas of the parks. They can also choose how detailed they would like the information to be (including the locations of the nearest rest rooms!)

There is also detailed audio for over 50 attractions including the ability to amplify audio for those who are hearing impaired. They also can read the captions on the hand held device while enjoying the ride itself. It’s truly a remarkable invention and I am so excited about it!

While I was at Disney, an older gentleman approached me and asked me if I would lead his blind wife into the ladies room. I of course agreed (she was the sweetest lady) but I felt bad for their predicament. The man had to put the care of his wife in my hands. So when I read this this morning, I thought of her. Someone I’ll never meet again but I know something like this can make her trips to Disney more enjoyable. So thank you Disney for once again making the Happiest Place on Earth more magical for everyone.

You can read more details about the handheld device as well as see a video featuring the device on The Disney Parks Blog.

Day 23 of No Dining Out June Challenge

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:25 AM PDT

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining out bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend at a restaurant(s) of their choice!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habbits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or save it for a goal you are working towards (like a trip to Disney World!).
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My progress:

No out to eat for us yesterday. Mother in law made a delicious meat loaf on Monday night, so we ate left overs for lunch and dinner (yeah it was that good).

How are you doing?

Leave a comment and let me know!

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:24 AM PDT

Every morning I will randomly choose 1 reader who left a comment on the blog the day before to win a $5 Amazon.com gift card. The more you comment, the more you are eligible to win!

Here are a few rules:

1.You can comment on any post on the blog to enter. It does not have to be this one. Each comment you make today counts! So the more you comment, the more you entries you get! So comment, comment, comment!
2. You must leave legitimate comments. Short comments like hi, what’s up, etc will be removed. Thank yous, your so awesome Kristin, etc… are fine. ;)
3. Every morning I will count all the comments from the day before (it’s not hard on the inside of the blog) and randomly choose 1 person to win a $5 Amazon.com gift card code. It’s totally random. The winner will have 24 hours to confirm my email and I will send them the Amazon.com code. I will personally be providing the gift card.
4. Everyone who comments is eligible to win and you can win multiple times a month!

I just wanted to tell you all how much I love and appreciate each and every one of you. You are such a blessing to my life!
