MagicJack Demonstrates Femtocell for VoIP

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 11:30 PM PDT

cell-to-world At the International Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, MagicJack demonstrated a device that will let users make VoIP calls using a GSM phone.

The company has already sold to the public a unit that uses conventional desk phones to provide service through a PC. With the newer product, which is scheduled for release sometime in the second quarter this year, your phone jack will be replaced by a mini-GSM base station, also known as a femtocell. All GSM phones from any GSM carrier will then be enabled to connect with your femtocell to make VoIP calls anywhere in the United States and Canada.

MagicJack, like many other VoIP service providers, will send calls over the IP network in lieu of the public phone network, so your phone service will cost less. Right now, the traditional MagicJack unit is available for roughly $40 USD, and it includes free service for a year, and $20 each year for all years after the first. This includes phone calls made to other MagicJack users in most countries of the world, as well as calling conventional lines. You can also currently make calls to cell phones, local or long distance, from a standard MagicJack-equipped phone. The company has stated that the femtocell rates will be the same as standard rates.

The MagicJack device being sold now is a bit longer than a box of matches, and it has a USB connection with a phone jack on the other end. You plug the USB connector into a port on your PC, load the proper software one time only, and then it uses the processor, power and broadband connection of the computer to make and receive calls. Their femtocell unit will use a PC connection as well, but it will allow users to make cell phone calls from the unit, not just wired phone calls.

The original MagicJack device provides fairly consistent service, with connections close to those achieved on landline calls. If you are working on your computer while talking on your phone run through MagicJack, sometimes you can hear background noise. It also takes two tries occasionally to get a dial tone on your traditional phone when using a MagicJack. But these aren’t really bothersome enough to make many users hang up on the $20 per year cost for calls anywhere. In addition, if you have family or friends overseas, they can purchase a MagicJack in the United States, activate it with a local area code, and use it overseas with that same number, making calls to them much more affordable.

There are already phone service carriers exploring femtocell use in efforts to improve their coverage inside the homes and businesses of subscribers, and to ease the strain that so many calls cause on their networks. The femtocell was designed so that it can work like a cell base station, within a home or business, to carry calls over your broadband connection rather than over the carrier’s network.

The MagicJack femtocell will allow its users to skip over mobile operators entirely. You can use it with any GSM phone, locked or unlocked, on any band. This includes all types of phones, including the popular Apple iPhone, even though this phone is usually locked into one carrier. The designers at MagicJack expect that most customers will make femtocell calls with older phones that they don’t currently use. The range of the femtocell can cover a home or business office that is 3,000 square feet in size.

SEVEN – a Push Email Client Released on Android 2.1

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 02:47 PM PDT

I know, I know Android already has a native PUSH Email client but the problem is it only offers solution for your Gmail and Exchange. Moreover, it is always better to have options, isn't it?

seven-android 2.1

With SEVEN you can configure as many email id's as you want, be it of Gmail or not. Apart from that, the UI of the software is also a bit different than the native email client on your Android. It offers White text on Black background which looks pleasant on eyes if you are bored of your native Push email client.

Though the PUSH email is not really that fast as your native client but is much better than normal POP/IMAP clients. One interesting feature being able to control your bandwidth usage. This feature might help if you are on roaming or on limited data plan (which in my opinion everyone is).

Besides that, the app is also bundled with SEVEN IM. SEVEN IM currently supports Google Talk and Windows Live Messenger. Also, Yahoo! and AIM will be added to the list before the app gets out of beta.

You can download this app from SEVEN's official site (you will have to register an account with them, of course).  Also, the app is available only on Android 2.1 and above so a lot many devices might be able to use it. The app looks promising and might interest many of our readers. Do let us know via comments if you liked the app.

Jailbreakers Don’t Upgrade to iTunes 9.2 For "Spirit", Ok for redsn0w and PwnageTool

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Apple just released an update to iTunes in the form of iTunes 9.2, however, if you jailbreak your iPhone, here is some advice from the dev team.

Don’t install today’s iTunes 9.2 if you plan on using Spirit for fresh JB (but it’s fine for PwnageTool & redsn0w users)

Do no upgrade to iTunes 9.2 if you are using the Spirit jailbreaking tool, however, if you are using redsn0w or PwnageTool to jailbreak the iPhone you can safely upgrade to iTunes 9.2.

Apple will also be releasing iOS4 for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch shortly. will be made available as a free update and can only be installed using iTunes 9.2, so if you have used Spirit to jailbreak your device you will have to wait till an update is available to it.

However, the iOS4 has already been jailbroken using PwnageTool Bundle. In addition to that, there is also a iOS4 unlock through Blacksn0w RC2.

Nokia Fails Again – Q2 Results Out

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 02:28 PM PDT

nokialogo_thumb1

The slow growth of Symbian^3, lack of marketing skills and the inability to see the future has taken a toll on Nokia’s sales. Today, Nokia announced its sales report for Q2 and the result isn’t too impressive. As a matter of fact, Nokia has finally admitted that its lacking behind from its competitors when it comes to Smartphone sales.

Nokia's Smartphone sales are so down that it has now updated its sales target for the next half of the year which targets slightly lesser than the previously targeted figure. To be precise:

  • Nokia now expects Devices & Services net sales to be at the lower end of, or slightly below, its previously expected range of EUR 6.7 billion to EUR 7.2 billion for the second quarter 2010. This update is primarily due to lower than previously expected average selling prices and mobile device volumes.
  • Nokia now expects Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin to be at the lower end of, or slightly below, its previously expected range of 9% to 12% for the second quarter 2010

Over the last few years Nokia really hasn't been able to keep up the pace with Smartphone giants like Apple, Google, HTC, Samsung and more. What lacks with Nokia is innovation. In my opinion Nokia makes awesome hardware just like HTC but it lags behind in the software department. Unless and until Nokia assures customers frequent improvements in the software department (and that has to be quick) people are not going to consume its products. Of course fanbois being the exceptions.

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 01:33 PM PDT

Samsung has most definitely emerged as a big Smartphone player. Since it has already scheduled three handsets with it’s brand new BADA platform, here’s a quick view to what it really means.

Samsung Bada
BADA is the new WAVE system platform for mobiles developed by Samsung. According to Samsung this platform will replace previous phones to high end smartphones. This BADA platform will revolutionize Samsungs cellphone market by filling it with high end and affordable smartphones.

Samsung first announced about BADA platform on 10th November 2009, releasing its first phone WAVE GT S8500 on 1st June 2010 making a sensation. The WAVE is a light & slim touchscreen phone powered by Samsung’s "hummingbird" CPU (S5PC110),which includes 1Ghz ARM cortex-8 CPU and a powerful in-built POWERVR SGX 3D graphics engine,"super AMOLED" Screen and has 720 pixel HD video capability.

BADA is a platform designed with unique features; its a platform with kernel configurable architecture which allows the use of either of the Linux kernel for high-end smartphones or the real-time operating system kernel for affordable smartphones due to its smaller memory footprint. On top of the kernel BADA platform has layers such as device, service and framework respectively.

The device layer is mainly responsible to provide core function of the device such as graphics, protocols, telephony, security etc. Service layer provides more service oriented features such as SNS, map, application purchasing and so on.The topmost framework layer provides application programming interface in C++ language to developers. BADA provides different user interface controls to developers- it provides basic user interface controls sush as listbox, color picker, tab, etc.

Additionally it has web browser control based on the open source Webkit and also features Adobe flash supporting flash 9. It also offers interactive mapping with points of interest features. These features can be embedded inside the native application. 600,000 iPhone 4 Pre-Ordered In One Day

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 12:51 PM PDT

In a record of sorts, Apple has sold 600,000 pre-orders of their next-gen device. This revelation came from Apple through a press release, earlier AT&T had said that they sold 10 times more pre-orders for the 4 than they had for the iPhone 3GS.

Apple’s Press Release for the iPhone 4 pre-orders read as follows (emphasis added):

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

The amount of pre-orders for iPhone 4 is not surprising though as it is a huge refresh from the iPhone 3GS and has an awesome display along with front-facing camera, better battery life and more. (iPhone 4 Features and Specs)

Now that is a huge number and Apple might sell millions of iPhone 4 devices in June itself. iPhone 4 pre-orders are still available, however they will now ship in July instead of June.
