The great lineup of speakers includes Sylvia Earle, Philippe Cousteau, representitives from the UN and Greenpeace among other experts focused on the health of our oceans. Oh, and that @BPGlobalPR guy will be speaking too. In order to deliver first hand accounts in pictures and video of the spill, a group of two professional photographers, a videographer and a writer have spent the last eight days documenting the spill, calling it TEDxOilSpill Expedition – click through to see the stunning photographs like the one: An important eventSo those are the details – now we’d like to discuss why this is so important. First of all of course, discussing and finding solutions for the current crisis in the Gulf (and doing whatever we can to make sure this never happens again) is the primary reason why this is so important. Secondly, discussing and learning how we can all help the health of our oceans is also extremely important. Beyond these primary reasons though, we see this effort as another step in an evolution of people using the Internet to take action in times of crisis. First of all, this a great use of TEDx – using TEDx as the central platform to organize around a crisis was a smart move by the organizers – the still developing TEDx brand (and of course the well-established TED brand) has the infrastructure, reach and stature to bring together such a speaker lineup quickly and partnerships with Ustream and LiveStream mean that the event can be live broadcast in high quality with little hassle to the organizers. Take the TEDx brand and this livestreaming ability and add that to a new service from Meetup called Meetup Everywhere (which we predicted could be transformative for Meetup, and this is a great use case) – and of course add in a little Twitter and Facebook – and you have an instant worldwide event that will not only raise awareness, but that has a very likely chance of coming up with real solutions. If you are in the DC area and want to help out, TEDxOilSpill is holding a meeting tomorrow for volunteers. If you’re not in DC, you can join or start a Meetup Everywhere, or just watch the livestream on Monday and add to the conversation. Although not affiliated, you can also stop by at the Crisis Commons wiki page on the spill to see how else you might be able to help in their efforts (if you’re in the Gulf, you should install the Oil Reporter app – also, you can take a look at these apps wherever you are), or work with the numerous non-profits that are helping with the cleanup efforts. So, what are you prepared to do? Note: The author is involved as a volunteer for both TEDxSB and Crisis Commons. Original title and link for this post: TEDxOilSpill – What Are You Prepared To Do? |

Apple Insider caught wind of a thread on the Apple Support forums that was beginning to address the issue, however the “comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter”. Apparently the issue stems from an issue with the radio baseband, and an update could resolve a good majority of the problems. For now, we’ll all twiddle our thumbs until Monday. Just make sure that you’re not touching the side of your phone while doing it. Original title and link for this post: iPhone 4 reception problems could be fixed come Monday. |

Not unless you head down to Apple’s UK flagship store in Regent Street, the place is literally crawling with them. Perhaps that is a slight exaggeration but the much sought after handset is spotted on two separate occasions in a 2:09 minute report by Sky News. 9to5mac stumbled across the video, on the 1:23 and 1:31 marks you will quite clearly see a white iPhone 4. Both the guy in the suit (do you think he looks a little out of place?) and the lady interviewee don’t look like they are Apple employees and it’s openly visible on both occasions. White iPhone 4 handsets aren’t expected to arrive until mid-July, how and why are the devices in the above video?! Conspiracy theories in the comments please. Face Wizard, a piece of software designed to manage a large number of Facebook profiles, was shut down at some point over the past two days. Its website simply reads “This item is no longer for sale”, while users of the service are reporting on a black hat SEO forum that the software has stopped working. Rumours point to Facebook issuing a Cease and Desist order against the software’s developer. A review of Face Wizard from March this year describes it as the ideal tool for updating “hundreds” of Facebook accounts..
This site, which may be a mirror of the now non-functioning FaceWizard.com, lists the software’s features in more detail. These include the ability to update the status of many accounts without having to login to each individually and to remotely comment on Page posts. The site notes: “In some niches such as Farmville etc simply posting 'add me' on a fans page status update can gain you thousands of new friends in a matter of hours.” The software even supported use of proxy IP numbers to help keep under Facebook’s radar. In short, Face Wizard, which sold for $249, was a Facebook spammer’s dream. So, has Facebook blocked Face Wizard? The apparent sudden disappearance of the service would lead us to believe so. It follows a similarly sudden blocking earlier this week of a small piece of Javascript that allowed Facebook users to invite all their friends to a Group or Event, something popular with spammers but that Facebook’s design currently doesn’t allow. When you’re top dog in the social network market, you’re also the biggest target for spam. TechCrunch published a guest post last year which exposed some of the ways marketers get around Facebook’s anti-spam controls. Facebook has been fighting back via a number of means including the ability to report friend requests from people you don’t know and even through lawsuits against significant spammers. We have had a query lodged with Facebook since Thursday over whether the blocking of the Javascript code was a deliberate security measure on their part. We will let you know if we hear back from them with their side of the story on both that and the Face Wizard shutdown.
