Avoid looking like a dickhead on Foursquare, Gowalla

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 04:01 AM PDT

With any new social media tool comes new social media users – and stuff ups!

Location-based (Geo-location) social media applications like Foursquare and Gowalla are starting to become mainstream tools for everyday users. You need to understand the products and act ‘appropriately’ to avoid looking like a dickhead.

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Thats what i think sometimes when looking at Foursquare and Gowalla.

The sole purpose of these devices is to goto a physical location, get out your mobile phone, and ‘check-in’. Basically saying to the world ‘I am here!’

What is the point? Besides telling your friends, not much. Oh you could earn a discount at a Cafe. + you may look like a cool early tech adopter! mm :)

Marketers are catching on and using the product to advertise their businesses so that’s good for them.

5 rules to follow when using Geo-location apps (actually follow them ok!):

1. We know you goto work every day – good on you, well done. Don’t check in every time you step in the front door at work.

2. Don’t check-in if you are just getting some milk and the supermarket next door, or going to McDonalds for a Big Mac – there isnt really anything special in that, sorry. Especially make sure silly check-ins like this are not broadcasted to Twitter and Facebook.

3. Don’t make a check-in for your home or friends home, unless you want someone to get burgled. You can ask Foursquare support to remove the location if you have already done so.

4. If you are creating a new venue, make sure you spell it right – please.

5. Don’t clutter up the app – don’t create check-in locations for every room of your building. Noone needs to know who the mayor of the male and female bathroom is!

Now being honest, I have committed all these 5 sins. Time to take some of my own advice.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg not happy with his new iPhone

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 11:55 PM PDT

Mark Zuckerberg – Facebook CEO apparently purchased a new iPhone over the weekend.

Yesterday Mark took to his Facebook wall to let people know about a few issues he is experiencing with his new device, namely call quality and battery life.

After several comments were left, Mark said: ‘My thumbs were hurting from my Blackberry so I switched. I'll probably get iPhone 4 if I don't switch to Android’

You have to ask, why did Mark not wait the 1 extra day for the iPhone 4 to come out?

He purchased a 3GS!

I do agree though about his comment on call quality. The iPhone is a great smartphone, except for the actual phone/calling bit!

Google fighting to make censorship illegal

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 08:21 PM PDT

It seems Google has had enough of the Chinese and Vietnamese internet filters (amongst other countries) and is look at taking further action.

Google is working with the U.S. government to try to make it illegal for countries to censor the Internet using the rules of international trade.

Listing broker head of communications, Robert Boorstin, in Washington told audiences that Google is convinced, as other companies, that censorship is a barrier to trade and said a number of ministries will work with the company to file a case before the World Trade Organization (WTO). The idea is that search results in Google censored limits the ability to enjoy fair trade and local competitors (such as Chinese search engine Baidu) for commercial advantage.

Google hopes that if he fight against communists in the struggle for freedom, that nobody will notice that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has accused Google of breaking privacy by looking at private networks and the illegal storage of data. Or that the deputy White House CTO has recently been reprimanded for inappropriate political discussions with his former Google colleagues.

Using the WTO to discipline Beijing is a smart move. First mentioned by the EU Vice-President, Neelie Kroes last month – EU officials quickly downplayed the comments saying that the issue require the construction of the first. Now comes Google and the U.S. government looking into international trade laws to stop internet censorship.

Twitter joining the Location game

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 07:09 PM PDT

Similar to Foursquare and Gowalla – Twitter is now creating their own location services for user tweets.

Users will be able to tag tweets with specific locations and also create new locations – much like Foursquare and Gowalla.

When you click on the location below the tweet you will be presented a small window with the location on Google Maps.

Many Foursquare and Gowalla users send tweets about their current location and Twitter is integrating these tweets to also show the location on Google maps if clicked.

Twitter will also be upgrading their API so developers can integrate with the Twitter Places functionality into their applications.

The new functionality is expected to roll out over the next month.
