Posted: 16 Jun 2010 11:20 PM PDT With the abundance of cheap web enabled mobile phones now – businesses cannot ignore the power of mobile search. Currently mobile search only accounts for about 9% of all search queries (with the other 91% on the computer). RBC Capital Markets in the US have done a study showing that currently mobile search accounts for only 2% of total search budget – clearly a gap in the 9% of total market share. I think using a PC for search is still more effective – the users has more visuals and control. The benefit of smartphone ads is that they take up about 20% of the screen size compared to a PC which takes up about 4% of the screen size with sponsored search ads. According to research 11% of smartphone users run a search atleast daily, and another 20% atleast once per week. Currently 157 billion searches are conducted via smartphones this year. In 2012 this is expected to rise to 586 billion searches. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
Facebook to provide SSL access (HTTPS) Posted: 16 Jun 2010 09:36 PM PDT Facebook has been praised by privacy advocates around the world for rolling out more simplified privacy controls last month. The privacy changes have also won praise from much of its users as now controlling your personal information is much more simple. Facebook has not said they are looking to roll out SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) access to the Facebook site, encrypting the link between a users computer and Facebook’s servers protecting user traffic from being intercepted. Google recently provided SSL access to Google.com (https://www.google.com) Facebook is yet to announce the official date SSL access will be available but we will keep you updated. The site would be https://www.facebook.com © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
Twitter to roll out new ads in Trending Topics Posted: 16 Jun 2010 07:12 PM PDT Twitter is testing a new feature allowing ads in the Trending Topics section. The feature is part of the Promoted Tweets, a tool Twitter is using to promote businesses and connect with its fans. If you look at the trending topics on the right hand side of your Twitter home you may see something like the following: You can see Toy Store is having their Tweets promoted. If you then click on ‘Toy Story’ you will see all tweet with Toy Store and Promoted Tweets where applicable, in this case by Disney Pixar This may be a good revenue tool for Twitter. In my opinion they are still flying in the dark, testing a new revenue channel, stopping it, rolling out a new one. Doesn’t look like they know 100% what they are doing – but only time will tell © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 05:48 PM PDT Microsoft has completed a deal with rival internet browser Opera, making Bing one of the default search engines in the browser search field. If you want to download the latest version of Opera 10.60 Beta goto: http://www.opera.com/browser/next/ Google will still remain as the Default search, but getting Bing infront of Opera users is a good win for Microsoft, although a small one. Opera is the company that complained to EU regulators about Internet Explorer being bundled with Windows. Safari 5 recently implement Bing as one of the default search providers in their browser, but still not the standard Default. What about Mozilla Firefox? Don’t count on it just yet. Asa Dotzler from Mozilla recently urged Firefox users to switch to Bing after Google boss Eric Schmidt told the world that net privacy was only for miscreants – ie a villain or person without morals. There’s an even greater history of hostility between Mozilla and Microsoft. Hopefully they can mend this relationship. Here is a screenshot of Bing in the new Opera Browser. Interestingly enough, both Yahoo and Bing are available in the Chrome web browser – but of course Google is default. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
