Old Glory, Deemed Graffiti And Painted Over, Repainted Posted: 06 Aug 2010 09:06 PM PDT Consider this a belated follow up to the first post. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/06/BA0T1EA5K3.DTL "Giordano, 44, said he drove 100 miles from his home in Valley Springs (Calaveras County), intent on painting a new flag, after hearing that the mural had been painted over. "They desecrated a memorial for 9/11. It upset me so bad," Giordano said. "I felt strongly to do something about it." Gallagher had the same idea, and the two men met for the first time at the mural site at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. They labored until 1:30 a.m. Sunday, working into the night by flashlight. "We decided that we weren't going to stop until it was done," Gallagher said. "It was important that the flag was flying on the Fourth of July." Gallagher, 43, of Pleasant Hill said it was ironic that state workers would paint over the Stars and Stripes. "The flag is constantly under attack in the state of California," he said."
Second Quarter GDP Increased 2.4% Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:56 PM PDT An increase is certainly better then a decrease, but 2.4% is less then optimal; especially given the so called 'stimulus'. http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/national/gdp/gdpnewsrelease.htm "Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States -- increased at an annual rate of 2.4 percent in the second quarter of 2010, (that is, from the first quarter to the second quarter), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 3.7 percent."
Unemployment Remains at 9.5% Despite 131k Jobs Lost And Revision of Last Month Numbers Down 97k Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:51 PM PDT How, you ask, can we loose 131k jobs and revise the job loss numbers from last month down almost 100k, and have unemployment remains at 9.5%? As I have gone on at length in past posts on this subject, it is how the employment number is calculated. As people get discouraged and stop looking for work, they are no longer counted. Basically we are discouraging our way to a low unemployment number; very unhealthy. http://www.cnbc.com/id/38590746 "Non-farm payrolls fell 131,000, the Labor Department said on Friday as temporary jobs to conduct the decennial census dropped by 143,000. Private employment, considered a better gauge of labor market health, rose 71,000 after increasing 31,000 in June. In addition, the government revised payrolls for May and June to show 97,000 fewer jobs than previously reported." To put this in the contexts of the last year; after rising to %9.5, 'fake' falling to %9.4, rising to %9.7, and then rising again to 9.8%, and rising again to 10.2%, dropping to 10%, held steady, dropping to 9.7%, held steady, held steady again, increased to 9.9%, dropped to 9.7%, fell to 9.5%, and has held steady.
