Publicada originalmente em doze edições mensais pela editora estadunidense DC Comics em 1986 — a graphic novel é considerada como um ponto chave na evolução das histórias em quadrinhos, introduzindo abordagens e linguagens antes ligadas apenas aos quadrinhos tidos como alternativos, oferecendo uma história singular que lidava com temáticas voltadas para uma platéia mais madura. Ambientada em uma realidade alternativa dos Estados Unidos da década de 1985, no qual os aventureiros fantasiados são um elemento do cotidiano, a trama principal de Watchmen gira em torno dos desdobramentos de uma conspiração envolvendo a investigação do assassinato de um super-herói. Nesta versão alternativa da Terra, o então presidente dos EUA, Richard Nixon, teria conduzido o país à vitória na Guerra do Vietnã e em decorrência deste fato, teria permanecido no poder por um longo período. Chegando a um momento delicado no contexto da Guerra Fria e em vias de declarar um conflito nuclear com a União Soviética.
