Worldcup boredom – Jabulani in news Posted: 20 Jun 2010 07:08 AM PDT BBC sports editor David says "the most boring World Cup in history". The goal statistics, over post shots, skied free kicks and missing targets underline this. Who is the villain? Fingers point to Jabulani, the prestigious soccer ball from Adidas. Literal meaning of Jabulani is “to celebrate". The word originated from the Bantu language isiZulu. This is the eleventh soccer ball from Adidas in the history of FIFA World cup. Technically speaking as per the standard specification of FIFA, Jabulani is the perfect one in with ideal spherical shape. Here see the FIFA standards and where Jabulani stands (Courtesy- Wikipedia)
See the manufacturing process of Jabulani FIFA praises Adidas- "From that first 32 white and black paneled Telstar to the eight-paneled synthetic masterpiece that is 'Jabulani', Adidas have maintained a standard is line with their core value "impossible is nothing." Then what is wrong with Jabulani? Can we equate the ball with bad play? Serbian Goal keeper Vladimir Stojkovic says ” I have played with many different balls in my time – those that swerve a lot, change direction, fly awkwardly – but this one is definitely the worst of all”. Words of other keepers are also not different. England star striker Rooney calls this ball a "night mare". Japanese defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka says “difficult for defenders to deal with, because of its unpredictability" Here we can see that the “unpredictability” factor is common to goal keepers, strikers and defenders. Reviewers are criticizing the complete technology drift from older version without adequate practices and experiments. The thermal bonding of panels makes the ball smoother, which may be the reason for the unpredictable behavior. Thomas Van Schaik the spokesman of Adidas Says "Players has been practicing with this ball since last January and the most of the feedbacks were positive". FIFA authorities are also supporting this. FIFA says that nothing wrong with Jabulani and everything will go normal when players get accustomed with this. Let's also hope the same and wait for the exciting soccer moments yet to come. |
