PAX 2010: Hands-On with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood Multiplayer

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:54 PM PDT

I’ll tell you what; I played a loooootta games at PAX today. And I only got to sit down for two of them: F3AR and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Based on that alone, those two games are the frontrunners for Game of the Show. Assassin’s Creed gets the edge because the awesomely soft thing I sat on to play the game was more comfortable than the hard stool I sat on to play F3AR. Anyway, here’s what I got to do with my first-ever multiplayer session in the Assassin’s Creed franchise (Yeah, I’m late to this party.):

What we played, from what I could tell, was the Assassin’s Creed version of deathmatch. And what that’s like, in execution, is nothing like normal deathmatch. Here’s the setup: You’re in a city, and there are people loitering and walking around just like in the campaigns in the Assassin’s Creeds of the past. You get to choose your appearance, and all of your options are folks who look like they could just be regular old NPCs. You get to choose “skills,” like throwing knives or the ability to disguise yourself. And then you’re set loose in the city with seven other people.

You’re immediately given a target which is another player. You’re pointed toward your target by a compass-like circle in the corner of the screen, and the marker on the compass gets larger as you get closer to your target. Here’s the rub: you don’t know who your target is, and if you kill a random NPC instead of your target or some other player, your compass marker goes away. So you gotta be smart, and the best way I found of identifying another player is by watching to see who runs instead of walks. Of course, I was terrible at it, so maybe I’m not the one to be giving out advice on this thing.

Now, this entire concept is very different from what we’re used to from competitive multiplayer games, and after my brief session, I was taken aback by the novelty of it enough that I really didn’t know what to think about it. I knew it felt a bit unpolished, as one might expect from an incomplete build. I chose throwing knives as one of my skills, and I could never seem to target the person I wanted to target in order to be able to use them. And the close-up-violent-murder attacks we know and love so much were so touchy that I had a lot of trouble putting myself into position to kill other players, even though past experience with the franchise was telling me I was doing what I was supposed to be doing.

But I’m kind of in love with the idea, and I think there’s a real chance that I’ll spend a good amount of time playing online with the final build of Brotherhood in November. Here we have an actual unique twist on online multiplayer, and it absolutely works as a competitive version of the established Assassin’s Creed gameplay. This might just be more than a tacked-on feature on a single-player game.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Walkthrough

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:38 PM PDT

On paper, Spider-Man, his abilities, and his universe have always cried out for an incredibly awesome video-game adaptation. Web-swinging around a sandbox New York is effectively the recipe for a successful game. But despite this fact, and the existence of three hit movies (two of which don’t totally suck), no developer has ever been able to deliver the killer app.

Little-known company Beenox is hoping to change this dynamic, promising a Spider-Man title that is as bold as it is varied. The developer was able to take the multiplicity of Spidey continuities and turn it into a strength, rather than a weakness, drawing from four different timelines in the canon to create a four-part dimensional odyssey that builds the foundation for a very wide audience.

Four different play-styles (each corresponding to a particular dimension) will keep gamers excited, and four different voice actors, including Neil Patrick Harris, will provide the wisecracks from behind the red mask. The company has also done well to include some of the franchise’s most appealing baddies, including Hobgoblin, Vulture, and Kraven the Hunter.

Check back in this space on release day for a full walkthrough!

H.A.W.X. 2 Walkthrough

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:29 PM PDT

The U.S. government has spent a countless amount of money on fighter planes since the beginning of the Cold War, and one question remains: If they don’t get to shoot anyone down, what’s the point? Combat flight sims have posed a similar question in the console age: if no one plays them, what’s the point? The H.A.W.X. 2 designers at Ubisoft are hoping to answer this question, or rather, trying to avoid having to answer it. They’re hoping to learn from the mistakes of the first installment and put out a product that will wow all the budding Geese and Icemen out there.

Dogfighting and PvP combat are very much on the docket, but the designers have a host of different flight plans in mind. Night bombing runs, stealth UAV piloting, carrier takeoff and landing, mid-air refueling — all very much included this new title, part of the “Tom Clancy’s” series of hyper-realistic military sims.

Those unfamiliar with the travails of hardcore flight simming will be well-served by this walkthrough, which will commence updating as soon as the game is available to us. Until then, good luck coming up with a cool call-sign.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Trophies

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:15 PM PDT

As one of the longest-running and most popular Marvel heroes, Spider-Man has always come in for a lot of tinkering. Beenox turns this weakness into a strength with their title Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, drawing on four different entries in the web-head’s canon.

Will you prefer Ultimate Spider-Man, Noir Spider-Man, the (old-school) Amazing Spider-Man, or Spider-Man 2099? Each of them have very different playing styles, different levels, enemies, and plot-lines. And, of course, different trophies. Keep scrolling for the full list.

H.A.W.X. 2 Trophies

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 10:09 PM PDT

H.A.W.X. 2 exists in the rarefied, oxygen-deficient air between arcade shoot-’em-up and flight sim. The trophies available reflect this dual nature, offering accolades for carrier landings and unassisted flight, as well as trophies more closely associated with online frag-fests. It remains to be seen whether or not the team at Ubisoft can satisfy both joystick-gripping constituencies.

What kind of pilot will you be? Regardless of your affinities, choices, and flying style, you’ll probably want to check the list of trophies waiting below.

PAX 2010: Warren Spector Keynote (Video)

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 08:27 PM PDT

On day 1 of PAX, Warren Spector delivered a (brilliant) keynote that can basically be summed up as “the history of geeks.” Using slides for emphasis and jokes, Spector walked through his own life’s geek-development, which started with comics like Fantastic 4, matured with D&D and Atari 2600, and then blossomed when he became a game developer himself.

The main gist of Spector’s forty-five minute keynote (full video below), was that video games are most definitely art, and we should demand more from them. Here’s a good snippet:

Challenge yourselves. Demand more from the games you’re offered. Vote with your dollars. Raise your voices and urge developers and publishers to give you something new and better–not just better executed versions of things we’ve already played.

Word. Here’s the full video.

Playstation finally getting Stranger’s Wrath port

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 05:33 PM PDT

After Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath was released on Xbox in 2005, there was talk of a Playstation 2 port. It’s finally happening – although five years later and for the PS3, but who’s complaining?

Developer Just Add Water has partnered with Oddworld Inhabitants to create a new, HD port of the first-person shooter to the PS3.

The new version will be updated in a lot of ways, with remastered dialogue and updated character models. Oh, and it’ll support Playstation Move, for an even bigger dose of new-and-improved. Just Add Water also mentioned some “additional bonus materials” in the package.

Stranger’s Wrath will show up on the Playstation Network next Easter, though the price hasn’t been released yet.

We’ve got boots on the ground at PAX 2010 and we’ll have some impressions of Portal 2′s co-op mode later.

Until then, check out some images Valve has released from the co-op mode, in which robot buddies help one another work together to get through GLaDOS’ test chambers. They’re not exactly informative, but, hell – anything to do with Portal 2 is exciting.

Guild Wars 2 App on its Way to Smart Phones

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 04:41 PM PDT

ArenaNet wants to extend the Guild Wars 2 experience, so it’s bringing it to smart phones and the iPad.

The new app isn’t finished yet, but it’s in the works and apparently is pretty big. It’ll offer a lot of connectivity to Guild Wars 2, allowing players to see what friends are online, message them, and follow them around the map.

According to ArenaNet, that’s not all the app will do, either. There’s no word on price or when the app will be available.
