DUSU Elections 2010: ABVP DUSU was bagged by Jitendra Choudhry as President Posted: 04 Sep 2010 05:02 AM PDT DUSU Elections 2010 has been held on Sep 3, 2010 and the ABVP DUSU was bagged by Jitendra Choudhry as President along with him the vice president elected was Priya Dabas and Neetu Dabas won the seat of the General Secretary of the prestigious students body. DUSU Elections 2010 tookplace in India's prime university Delhi University to select the new Students President. Jitendra Choudhry, Priya Dabas and Neetu Dabas were ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi parishad) candidates and from National Students Union of India (NSUI) only Akshay Kumar. The students of 51 colleges under Delhi University casted their votes. The turn out this year was reported just 35% as compared to 42% last year. The reasons being stated that this time all the print posters, campaigns were banned by the Lyngdoh committee and only hand made posters were allowed at certain places. Many students were not even aware of the leaders to be elected from. Though they used the virtual media, i.e internet, blogs etc sort of an online campaign but still the students were not well aware, Specially the freshers who just joined the freshman year. DU students did not only elect the DUSU panel but also their college union. A total of 943 Electronic Voting machines were used all over DU. The main parties that contested for the elections included the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students Union of India (NSUI), All India Students Federation (AISF), All India Students Association (AISA), Indian National Students Organization (INSO) and the Students Federation of India (SFI). The candidates competing for the post of DUSU president included Aparajitha Raja of AISF, Shweta Raj of AISA, Jitender Choudhary of ABVP, Harish Choudhary of NSUI, Sachin Kumar Dalal of INSO and Sunand of SFI. ABVP came out victorious out of all. With a new fervor the panel is all set to operate in Delhi University for making the varsity a place for students to express freely and guide and guard them. Indian men’s won gold in Archery World Cup Posted: 04 Sep 2010 02:53 AM PDT Indian men’s won gold in Archery World Cup. Today on September 4, 2010 in Shanghai the Indian men’s recurve team of Jayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai and Rahul Banerjee clinched the gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage IV after beating Japan. The Indian trio (Jayanta Talukdar, Tarundeep Rai and Rahul Banerjee) beat the Japanese team of Ryota Amano, Takaharu Furukawa, Hidekl Kikuchi 224-220 to stay on top. At the first end India led Japan 57-54 and built on it to make it 113-108 in the second end. Japan was better in the third end (56-55) and both teams finished in a tie of 56-56 for their last arrows. However, India rode on the fine show in the first ends to clinch the gold medal. The men’s team had returned empty-handed from the World Cup Stage III at Ogden after losing the quarterfinal to the hosts USA. This time India’s first round victim was Great Britain, one of the strong contenders at the Commonwealth Games, and the team notched a 218-215 victory. Incidentally, India beat USA 225-208 in the quarterfinal to avenge their loss in the last edition. Japan came into the final after shocking world champion Korea 224-216. Sachin Tendulkar was on Friday conferred with the Indian Air Force’s honorary rank of Group Captain to honour his cricketing achievements and contribution to the nation. Sachin is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by IAF (Indian Air Force) and the first personality with no aviation background to receive the honour. Earlier, President Pratibha Patil had conferred the honorary rank of the IAF on the iconic batsman on June 23 this year. In 2008, India’s World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev had received the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the Territorial Army. The 37-year-old Tendulkar was inducted into the Air Force as its brand ambassador with IAF chief Air Chief Marshal PV Naik doing the honours in a glittering ceremony at the Air Force auditorium. “It’s a great pleasure and honour to be honoured by IAF. It was a wishful thinking and it has come true today. I’m extremely proud to be a part of IAF. I want to urge the youth to join air force and serve the nation. So dream, because dreams do come true,” Tendulkar said after receiving the honour. Following are the persons granted honorary ranks by the IAF: Till now, 21 eminent personalities have been granted honorary ranks by the IAF, the first being the Raja of Jawhar Yashwant Rao, who was conferred the Flight Lieutenant’s rank in 1944. Industrialist JRD Tata was made an honorary Air Vice Marshal in 1974 and the last one to get such an honour in 1990 was industrialist-cum-aviator Vijaypat Singhania, who is now an honorary Air Commodore. In a career spanning more than two decades, Tendulkar has crossed many milestones and holds almost every batting record. He is the most-capped Test cricketer in the world with 169 matches to his name. Tendulkar has played 442 one-day internationals, just a couple of matches less than Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya’s record of 444.The veteran right-hander has scored 13,742 runs in 169 Tests at an average of 56.08, notching up 48 hundreds and 55 half-centuries in the process. He has 17,598 runs, including 46 centuries, in his 442 one-dayers. The Mumbaikar also holds the distinction of being the first batsman to score a double hundred in ODIs.
