Posted: 04 Sep 2010 10:14 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson has just rolled out a new firmware update for their Symbian running multimedia oriented handset – the Vivaz. The Sony Ericsson Vivaz runs on the old and out-dated Symbian S60v5 OS and features a 3.2-inch resistive screen. Sony Ericsson VivazThe main selling point of the phone is the 8MP camera at its back and its 720p HD video recording with continuous auto-focus. The firmware update is numbered R2EA023.

Here is the change-log according to DailyMobile-:

*Start up is faster.

*Google maps updated now has search by voice feature.

*Facebook and Roadsync Panels which can now be added to your standby screen.

*Enhanced performance and functionality for YouTube, Facebook, RoadSync and Barcode Reader.

*Stability improvement in the areas of W-LAN, MMS and Internet.

*Video quality improvement for playing MPEG4 format.

*Performance improvement when multitasking.

From the above change-log it is clearly visible that this firmware update is aimed at improving the performance and stability of the device. Vivaz owners can update the firmware of their handset by using the Sony Ericsson Update Service software. However, users are recommended to make a backup of their data before proceeding with the firmware update as a firmware update will wipe the phone clean of all data.

New MeeGo UI Screenshots Leak On The Internet

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 09:05 AM PDT

Nokia is expected to announce its MeeGo running handsets at the upcoming Nokia Event on September 15. The first MeeGo handset to be released by the Finnish company is expected to be the Nokia N9. In all probability,  the N9 will hit the retail market in October or November month of this year.New-MeeGo-UI-Screenshots-Emerge Now few screenshots of the MeeGo UI have leaked on the Internet and they look pretty impressive.

From the leaked screenshots, the UI of the MeeGo OS looks polished to me. It also looks like MeeGo will offer a lot of eye candy with animations and "Spaces' like effect. Though on a personal note, I did not like the battery and the network bar icons present in the status bar at the extreme left.

From the screenshots it is clearly evident that the Task manager of the MeeGo OS will show all the open applications in thumbnails which resemble the "Spaces" feature of Mac OS X.

Huawei Ideos: The Cheapest Android Smartphone Yet at $150

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 07:03 AM PDT

Huawei IdeosAmong all the heavyweight launches at IFA 2010, Berlin, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, there was an announcement by Huawei that it is planning to launch a new Android smartphone soon. It’s the Huawei Ideos which will run Android 2.2 Froyo. It’s an entry level Android smartphone which will be priced at around $150 (Rs. 7000) or lower, which makes it the cheapest Android smartphone to date. With most Android phones still not running Froyo and some new phones still launching with Android 1.6, an ultra cheap, budget Android smartphone running Froyo on release is definitely impressive.

“The popularity of the smartphone is one of the key tools to bringing people into the ‘Golden Age of Mobile Broadband,’ which is linked to Google’s mobile Internet strategy. We are proud to have already achieved our goal from early 2010 of developing a US$150 smartphone with an excellent user experience. The IDEOS is an affordable option, designed to lower barriers to entry to allow easy mobile Internet access.”, said Kevin Tao, CEO, Huawei.

The Huawei Ideos comes with a 2.8 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It is powered by a 528 MHz processor and has a 3.15 MP camera with autofocus. It will also offer the standard connectivity options like GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP. It also has a GPS transceiver with A-GPS.

That’s quite a lot of features in a very low price. With the Ideos, Android is finally encroaching on Symbian’s home territory of low cost smartphones. And it certainly looks like it’s going to win.
