AppStore hits 250,000 applications Posted: 31 Aug 2010 09:16 PM PDT It has been a little over 2 years since Apple launched the AppStore. The store now has over 250,000 applications from around 50,000 developers. Books and Games are the 2 most popular categories, with about 30% market share combined. Around 30% of the apps are free, 70% are paid-for applications. In comparison, the Android Marketplace has about 95,000 applications and the BlackBerry AppWorld – 9,000. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
More people using Facebook Places in Australia through US VPN Posted: 31 Aug 2010 08:53 PM PDT As previously mentioned more and more people in Australia are accessing Facebook places via a VPN hack – it seems people will goto any lengths to be the first users of new social media technologies like this. So you may ask, how are people accessing Facebook places through a USA VPN? People are signing up to get free VPN access through Hotspot Shield, which seems to have a very simple setup procedure. Users need to make sure Wifi and 3G are both off. Restart your phone and then open up the Facebook application and goto the Facebook places tab. The app is determining your location by your IP address and totally ignores the GPS coordinates – which now makes Facebook places usable by international users outside the USA. Of course – i don’t recommend you do anything you shouldn’t. be good people It seems like Insidefacebook.com and also the folks on the MacTalk Australia forums figured out this trick a few days ago and its surprising how many people in Australia are so keen to get ‘beta’ access of Facebook places © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |

Facebook Security team coming to Australia Posted: 29 Aug 2010 06:56 PM PDT A member of Facebook’s security team will visit Australia and meet with child-safety advocates. Recently 3 Australian men were arrested over a child-porn ring they were running on Facebook. Facebook removed the accounts that were part of the original offenses, but it is alleged the accused then opened new accounts on the site before being charged by authorities. More to come as the Facebook Security team hit the ground. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
People using Facebook Places in Australia via VPN hack Posted: 26 Aug 2010 08:20 PM PDT Ok so we know Facebook places is not available in the Australia yet. However it seems when Facebook created the product it may have been a rushed launch – Facebook is restricting access via your location using your IP address. However they don’t even check your GSP coordinates at all. This post on the mactalk au forums shows how one user got a US VPN account and is now using Facebook places in Australia – and also able to download other geo-locked applications from the appstore. Personally, i have no problem waiting for Places to officially be rolled out. As by no means am i recommending you use the above ‘hack’ – so to speak. No doubt Facebook have caught on to people tricking their system like this. They may indeed roll out an updated iPhone application correcting this (without explicitly pointing out this flaw), only time will tell. It is just interesting to see how die-hard some of these social media peeps are © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | One comment | Add to del.icio.us |

Apple iAD’s live in Australia, incorporating Google ads Posted: 24 Aug 2010 02:40 PM PDT Whilst we haven’t heard much from Apple on the iAD advertising platform lately – if you use international applications on your iPhone in Australia you will notice some of then now have iAD’s. I noticed Echofon (Twitter client), has put ads at the top of the screen near the search button – possibly getting people to accidentally click on the ads instead of the search. However once you click on the ad, you have to confirm you actually want to view the ad. A smart move by Apple to make sure only ‘real’ clicks are going through. So the interesting thing is that Echofon actually has Google ads (via Admob no doubt) in the app and Apple is fine for this – and even has changed these into iAD’s. If a user clicks on the ad they will remain in the application where they can easily go back to the app once done viewing. Rather neat way to handle this. Reading reviews on the App Store it seems application with ads still do copy a fair amount of criticism. The Echofon app is not all that popular and fairly basic in functionality but interesting to see they are looking to generate revenue on their application with iADs. If anyone knows CTRs and the like for mobile advertising feel free to let us know. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
Ricky Ponting happy for players to use Twitter and Facebook Posted: 23 Aug 2010 08:54 PM PDT Ricky Ponting said he is happy for players to use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook while touring England. However the English teams management has banned the use of these social networking sites and have also put clauses in players contracts stipulating the terms. Ponting believes if the players are promoting the game, either through traditional methods or social media – he doesn’t have a problem with it. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
Google removes support for IE6 in Docs and Sites Posted: 23 Aug 2010 08:41 PM PDT Google has now also joined the movement to kill off Internet Explorer 6 . Google is removing support for IE6 in its two main services Docs & Sites. Google has already removed support for IE6 in YouTube and it was already advising users with IE6 like older browser to upgrade to new browsers like in Orkut, Gmail, Wikiepedia etc. but now it will completely remove support for IE6 in Docs and Sites from March 1. IE6 users will see the message to upgrade to modern browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox etc. and many functionalities in these services are already not working for them. Last year many companies have already removed support for IE6 and advised other sites to remove support for Internet Explorer 6 too. IE6 users are also not happy with this browser. It lacks all functionalities that modern browsers have and also it is more vulnerable to attacks. Most of the IE6 users are using it because it is the default browser in their windows systems and they are not much aware of upgrading it or users in Colleges, Companies that are also not interested in browsing the web more efficiently. But we all have to agree that people must stop using IE6 for the web to move on. IE6 can't handle the modern web applications and modern web development techniques. So all users and enterprises should upgrade to modern browsers and operating systems too and leave the old ones. With Google many other web services will also phase out support for IE6 and Google will also continue this with its other services. We support Google for the steps and hope IE6 users will upgrade to new browsers or miss the modern web experience. © admin for Social Media News, 2010. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us |
